Ran, why no Merion?
« on: February 17, 2013, 01:57:25 PM »
Does anyone know why Ran has not profiled Merion East in his courses by country? Obviously I know there's never a shortage of Merion discussions on this board but I just found it curious.

Thanks!
2016 Highlights:  Streamsong Blue (3/17); Streamsong Red (3/17); Charles River Club (5/16); The Country Club - Brookline (5/17); Myopia Hunt Club (5/17); Fishers Island Club (5/18); Aronomink GC (10/16); Pine Valley GC (10/17); Somerset Hills CC (10/18)

I think he would need more space on the server if that Pandora's box was ever opened.

I recall some discussion regarding certain courses not wanting to be profiled on this site, but I don't know if Merion was one of them.

Poor Ran probably doesn't know where to put it on the architecture timeline; as competing evidence of many a virulent thread suggest that everybody, including the prophet Elijah, had some substantial hand in the design.

Ran only does reviews after being asked by the club or course.

Interesting. Didn't know that. Did Augusta National ask Ran to give his review of that course?

I am not sure what his policy was back when he did Augusta.  He now only does reviews when asked by someone in authority at the club.  That could be an owner, board member, or greens keeper.

I have had Ran to Merion as my guest several times and reviewing the course has never come up.

Not sure this is the case either as he has a great review of Friar's Head and they don't seek publicity.  I can't find it anymore on the site  but he used to say that some courses don't need to be reviewed as they were well known and talked to death.

I wouldn't be surprised if a thread devoted to Merion appears prior to this year's Open.

Ran's write-ups are quite unique.

He has an uncanny ability to articulate the architectural merits of the courses he profiles, even with just one play.

I always enjoy reading them

I remember Ran saying something about there is no need to profile such widely known and frequently profiled courses.

Couldn't agree more

I agree as well. Hence why I posted this topic.  :)

I could have sworn that there used to be one. Perhaps the club asked it to be removed?

Sean,

I've been on GCA for years and have never seen Merion profiled.  In fact, when I first signed on, I specifically noticed that there was no profile.

Knowing that this comment is off topic and possibly worth a thread of its own, I love the black and white photos on this tour. In general. black and whites would suit my taste. I feel like more truth is revealed in black and white as opposed to color.

From the homepage: "Courses that have been written to death (Augusta National, Pebble Beach, etc.) are included for sake of completeness only, but are the shortest profiles. "

Not a question of whether or not the courses seek publicity, its a question of a course specifically requesting that posted information be removed from this site.  "The Rat and Toilet Plunger" is one example of a course that requested that photos be removed.
