Greenbrook CC (various) in North Caldwell, NJ
« on: September 16, 2012, 06:57:13 AM »
By "various" I mean this:

Originally designed by Robert White, the force behind the creation of the PGA of America, the course opened for play in 1923.  Robert Trent Jones rebuilt a few greens and tees in 1948 and additional upgrades were completed in 1979 when Hal Purdy added a scenic lake to the par-three 17th hole.  In recent years, further modifications and upgrades by course designers Geoffrey Cornish, Brian Silva and Mark Mungeum continue to maximize the playability of the challenging Par 71 (Men's) and Par 73 (Women's) landscape.

Other than a mention as a Robert White course, I couldn't find any other mention of this course here.

Any comments from those who have played there?

Steve,

The problem with the course is the location of the clubhouse which forced the routing to traverse the hillside.

On a similar property a mile away, Mountain Ridge, Ross sited the clubhouse on the highest point on the property, whereas, at Green Brook, the clubhouse is at the midpoint, elevation wise, with the holes traversing up the slope to the high point, then traversing back down the slope to the clubhouse, then traversing down the slope to the lowest point on the property, then traversing back up the slope to the clubhouse.

This pattern results in continuous sidehill lies with the ball either above or below your feet.

In addition, balls/drives starting on one side of a fairway either end up in the same side rough or on the opposite side of the fairway.
Not an attractive situation.

Steve,

It's been some years since I played the course. It was on our rotation of high school courses when I played for Pingry in the late 90's. I remember it always being in fantastic shape, even early season and, much as Pat described, having some brutal sidehill lies. The greens always rolled fast and true. The one thing I remember most is that #8 is one of the truly fantastic par 3's in the state of NJ. I can't seem to find a picture, but it's a long (215 yd?) par 3 over a deep ravine with a fast-moving and large creek running through it. Very pretty. I wish I could find a picture.

I have played there a few times.
Yes, the 8th is a solid par 3.

I particularly like the 6th hole although it is definitely quirky.  You tee off from the low point of the property to a blind fairway and dogleg right.  For some reason this hole sticks in my head.

The 9th may be one of the worst holes in NJ.  Its a sharper dogleg than the 17th at Plainfield with one of the craziest unfair greens i've ever seen.

Agreed, and they mow it at a completely different and slower pace than all of the other greens.

Played Green Brook for the first time today in the MGA father-son...I went with low expectations and was blown away.  Dramatic terrain, 'New England views', wonderful conditioning and really strong greens.  I actually thought 8 was a boring par 3, in part because it's set in low-lying land surrounded by trees, whereas the rest of the course has benefited from extensive tree removal.  The dogleg on 9 IS very sharp, but the green itself is awesome...perhaps the steepest back-to-front two tier green that I've played.  And I rarely disagree with Pat...and love Mountain Ridge, but I think it might be even more fun to play Green Brook every weekend!
