What I love about St.Andrews is....
« on: September 12, 2012, 04:36:32 AM »
....strolling down to the Eden course a few hours after the last tee-time and shooting round in two hours...

What I love about St.Andrews is having a round on the himalayas before crossing the 2nd & 17th fairways and enjoying a pint in the Jigger...

etc... etc...

that I am here in St. Andrews right now, looking out on 1 and 18 in the sunshine.

that I spent the best 4 years of my life here.

that during said 4 years I met my wife.

that after beating my Stanford counterpart yesterday in our St. Andrews v Stanford match, I can be smug over dinner in Lower College Hall tonight.

(PS. Patrick Rodgers shot 65 at North Berwick a couple of days ago with a bogey on Redan.  I didn't quite manage 65.....)
2011 highlights- Royal Aberdeen, Loch Lomond, Moray Old, NGLA (always a pleasure), Muirfield Village, Saucon Valley, watching the new holes coming along at The Renaissance Club.

....that no matter how long it has been since my last visit, I feel home again.

....occasionally, deciding at the last minute to walk over to the Old starter shack and he says that an R&A member is going in 10 minutes with an opening for a fourth.   :)

....having a pint after the round, and either walking down to the Jigger for dinner or stopping by Gordon's house.  He has the best view of the course, and his wife always make a great meal...not to mention, Gordon and I will enjoy several whiskeys before Sheila pours me back on the train for Edinburgh.

....the people.

....the golf.

....home....and I was born and live in Georgia.

In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Just knowing that it exists and that I will return some day, There is nothing better than waking up in the B&B and after a good brakfast putting you clubs on your back and walking the 2 blocks down to the first tee of the Old Course.

Ditto.  I love pretty much everything about being in St Andrews (except the ever-escalating green fee on the Old).

After they gave Bobby Jones the keys to the city, he reportedly said something like, I could subtract all the days of my life except those spent in St Andrews and I would still have lived a full life.

I love wandering down Market or South Street, stopping for a coffee, cutting over to explore the cathedral and see the Morris gravestones, and then ramble down the Scores past the castle ruins and on to watch groups finishing the 18th.

St Andrews is an absolute must for any golfer interested in the history of the game.

Sitting alone with my imagination and overloaded senses on a bench in the quiet darkness, waiting for the starter to show up to get out as a single on The Old Course.

Sitting on the stone steps adjacent to the 18th green after a round on the Old Course and looking out at the splendor where land and water meet.

My first time.  Red eye to Edinburgh.  Rent a car and drive to the links parking lot without GPS or looking at a map.   Wandering around like it was my yard and I was home after a long absence.  Walking down Market St. and being asked by an elderly stranger “Make any birdies?” Pints with the caddies at the Jigger or Dunvegan.  A Sunday round on the New and stroll on the Old ending at a bench overlooking the 14th tee where there was a stiff breeze blowing in from the town and wondering “how the hell do you play this?”  Everything.

A special thanks to the gca.com folks and site I discovered when planning this trip.

I love that it is there... what it represents... that someday I will get to play my first round there and that it will be with my dad.

You R&A members have it pretty soft.  Push the buzzer and drinks arrive.

Actually, speaking of 'Play fair', I couldn't help notice the name on the Club Champions Board at Scotscraig the other day. One Capt H. L. Playfair (later Major and Sir?) was Club Champ I think on three or four separate occasions. Couple of great photos of him in the clubhouse too. Right Dour Auld Bugger!!!

Thanks Marty, not a bad view  ;D
Although it looked more like the North Sea last week when we had some storms come thru, but I was still a long way from St Andrews!
