Streaking was rampant until the networks stopped showing the culprits.  Over a year ago I outlined how easy it would be to remove the audio of these miscreants.  They do it to be heard and will stop when no one hears them.  This lies 100% at the networks feet.

I will say that the anti Sergio chants were the only entertainment over the last few holes yesterday.  Like any other "reality show" expect the networks to soon be feeding lines to the patrons.

Brian,
I agree that the golf fans at Bethpage were a bit over the top. I also agree that fans in general have to calm down, but you need to pump the brakes a bit when you call NY fans idiots who drink too much. To date, we have not had a fan beaten tnto a coma for wearing the wrong jersey to a game.

No but in recent years you have had a Yankee fan convicted of second degree murder for running over a Red Sox fan outside of a bar after a heated argument over the rivalry and you have had another Yankee fan arrested after stabbing a Red Sox fan after an argument in a restaurant.

I agree that ESPN, NBC and The Golf Channel bear some responsibility for glorifying the rowdy behavior of the Bethpage fans since the first US Open.  I distinctly remember Chris Berman doing just that when he was in the booth.

I'll say it again - stop selling beer.

And give a marshal the right to have a person removed.

Was the behavior of the competitors and fans at the Ryder Cup at TCC a catalyst for encouraging this behavior ?

Most marshals don't want this right. Most are just volunteers who receive little to no training, especially in terms of crowd control. The events also wouldn't want the liability of entrusting volunteers with that job.

My dad has volunteered at a great many USGA and PGA-run events. I specifically recall he told me while working the WGC match play event that he had the authority to warn spectators (either due to behavior or inappropriate phone use) and also had the authority to call in an "enforcement team" of two security personnel who would escort offenders off the property if necessary. I wouldn't imagine that is unique to just that event, but I'm also sure it's easier for a marshal at the sparsely-attended WGC match play event to be aware of who a specific offender is than it would be for anyone at a very crowded NYC-area playoff event.

Patrick:

By most accounts, fan behavior at the 1991 Ryder Cup at Kiawah was pretty boorish as well. And some of the Euro players complained they were egged on by the American side.
