Ron, how did you get into coaching high school golf? What do you do as coach? As I recall all our HS coach did was drive us to matches.

PS Roswell is a great institution.

Ron I don't think you answered my questions...

Perhaps my reading comprehension is the same as Doug's, but I can't see an answer of how you got into coaching (unless you're referring to the Fox Chapel paragraph).  Perhaps you can "flesh it out" a little.  Can you share a word of how you first were approached about coaching, the different challenges of coaching girls vs boys, etc.

At the risk of being a pushy Irishman  :D, I think Jeff Shelman still had a few open questions:

- What do you do on fall Sundays? Play golf or watch the Bills?
- What is best 'unknown' course in WNY?

Perhaps you answered the 2nd question with your Sheridan Park answer (even though it's a GLARING snub to you-know-which course).   >:(

How do the fine people of Buffalo view the Jim Kelly led Bills teams of the early 90s - as a success or with regret?

Music City Miracle - lateral or forward pass?

The same way the people of Minnesota view Fran Tarkenton and the Vikings. ;)

The folks of Buffalo view the '90s Bills as a great team that personified resilience and tenacity.

It was a forward pass.

I didn't realize that Doug had a round two of questions...Subliminal messaging, I guess~

How did you get into coaching high school golf?

I am a full-time teacher and part-time golf writer (I like to think so...) When I arrived 15 years ago at the school, I began conversing with the then-current coach about golf and the team. Eventually he invited me out to help and become the assistant coach. About 8 years ago, a bunch of girls came to me and said they wanted to start a girls team, with me as the coach. That one runs in the Spring, with the guys in the Fall. I took over as head boys coach about 6 years ago.

What do you do as coach?

Two different animals. The boys team had tryouts last week. We will do short game practice today, then have two rounds of knockout matches wednesday and thursday at Harvest Hill. We have three foursomes, so 1 v. 2 and 3 v. 4 the first nine, then winners and losers v. each other in the second nine. That will happen with the 5-8 and 9-12 foursomes, too. On Thursday, I'll move guys around and see who really has balls. During matches, I don't play (as my HS coach did). I ride around in a cart and keep them focused and motivated. I'll remind them that they are allowed to take everything but their blood, sweat and guts home with them. Since it is such an individual sport, I make it a privilege to turn golf into a team event. We don't have much time for fitness anymore with the boys, as the schedule is so compressed in the fall.

With the girls, we begin March 1st, so we have 1.5 months of indoor season. We will do fitness for most of it, along with a few visits to golf domes in the area. We also fit two weeks of spring break in, so it's only a month of indoor. With the girls, they like less coach on-course contact, so I'll wave a lot and make sure they have food and beverage. Unlike the guys, who play 9-hole matches at match play, the girls compete in a Toronto-based league with 18-hole medal tournaments.

Senyor Jeff~

- How common is it for someone in Buffalo to be a member of a club in Ontario? Or play across the border on a regular basis? Has that become more difficult since 9/11?

As Ed indicated, Cherry Hill is quite the exception. It is not very common for USA to join CA clubs. Playing across the border is not as common, but not due to 9/11. You need a Nexxus pass (frequent commuter, but EVERYONE in the vehicle needs one) to use the fast lanes. You need passport or enhanced drivers license to cross the border. What has really changed things is the crapping of the economy. We used to get killer rates in Canada; not so anymore. Very enjoyable public courses, but not a great deal anymore.

- What do you do on fall Sundays? Play golf or watch the Bills?

Half and half. If I go to one Bills' game a year, that's a lot. I'll hang out with friends. A daily double for me is a round of golf in the AM and a game or two of football on tv in the afternoon. That's a kick-ass day.

- What is best 'unknown' course in WNY?

Unknown by whom? By raters, it would be CCBuffalo or Park. By GCA folks, probably Stafford and Springville, both country clubs. By area folks, Ironwood & Byrncliff, since they are not in Erie County. For me, WNY is Batavia west to Buffalo. Rochester, also a part of WNY, should be addressed by John Lyon or others of his zip code.

Success. Only the losers have regret. We reached the top of the mountain four consecutive years. Coulda shoulda woulda is for losers.

Music City Miracle - lateral or forward pass?

Lateral. Doesn't really matter. The team sucked that year and would have gone out the next game.

Music City Miracle - lateral or forward pass?

With hindsight, most view that period as some amazing times.  Unfortunately, by the 3rd or 4th year, some fans started taking winning for granted, and really lost sight of how great that team was.  Over a decade plus of no playoffs, it's a reminder to enjoy whatever wins you get and not focus so much on the overall championship.

I attend / watch sporting events for the shared experience with my community.  The fact that the Bills ended up gagging the rest of the season last year didn't eliminate the exhiliration I felt and hugs I shared with strangers when we finally beat the Patriots.

As for the MCM - I made my peace with that one several years ago.  My main complaint was that they never threw the initial flag, when the "first glance" clearly looked like a forward pass.   I'm fine with saying it was legal, and even can sympathize if the referees were influenced by the home crowd.  The Bills had a few very favorable officiating errors in the Comeback Game over Houston, so it all evens out in the long run.

But I'll disagree with Ron that the team sucked. Tennessee ended up going to the Superbowl that year, and the Bills had the best-ranked defense in the league (1st overall, 1st vs pass).

That was the height of the Flutie vs Johnson Controversy.  Phillips let Johnson play for Flutie in Week 16.  Rob Johnson had his one anomaly of a good game and then Phillips decided he would start the playoffs.

I was firmly in the Flutie camp in that one.

Ron, How does Niagara Falls CC rate?  What's its architectural history?

It was the first good course I ever set foot on - during the Porter Cup.  Blew my mind!

How does Niagara Falls CC rate?

I have it ranked in my top ten local private clubs. It is enjoyable to play and is kept in very nice condition. It has a lot of neat holes, but not a lot of architectural continuity, because...

What's its architectural history?

Originally a Tillinghast, it had RTJI and Cornish in, along with some others. There is little Tilly left. It is a melting pot of styles and pedigrees.
