Wolf Point only has three different cuts. Greens, fairways, and a ring of semi that seperates the close cut turf from native. Its not so much that the golf course itself is that big, (the entire irrigated area is about 90 acres or just under that) its just that it is all basically cut at the same height. Since we most often use a large gang mower to cut the fairways at 1/2 inch, and the fact that we have bermuda that doesn't require any fungicide and is drought tolerant, our cost per acre to maintain is a lot less then what one might think.
I've played prairie club dunes and its true that the course is huge. At wolf point we worked very hard with the green's design to make it matter where you hit it off the tee. Hit it to the wrong side and you are often left with a shot to a green sloping away with trouble behind. At PCD, while it sometimes mattered which side you hit it from a visual perspective, I didn't get the sense that the greens were going to repel a shot coming from the wrong side. But, I only played it once, and I know WP much better.
The new course at Dismal River will be mostly fwy with very little rough so it may end up with a big fwy acreage number as well, and it will matter where you hit it off the tee.
