Intro:
A couple of years ago, I started to post some course reviews...I have gotten away from it for various reasons but I thought I might do a few this summer/fall. Enjoy!
Installment #6.…
The Country Club (TN)
Attributed to: William Langford 1955
Location: Morristown TN
What makes it
good:
An outstanding set of greens with some bold features and a very good set of par 3s. A solid routing utilizing significantly undulating land. Features that are clearly bold.
The approach to the par 5 1st hole. Immediately the bold features of Langford are obvious.
The cool, volcano-like par 3 17th with an absolute killer green:
What makes it
NOT so great?
The course has suffered from benign neglect and is sorely in need of a improved maintenance, recapturing green surface and possibly a different grassing scheme. Wall to wall thick soft bermuda mutes the features as there is simply no ground game. Power lines unfortunately are everywhere throughout the course. Cart path placement is abysmal. This is an unpolished gem, but given the cost of burying power lines and restoring the course, I don't suspect it will ever be shiny again.
The dropshot par 3 short 4th, with the all too present power lines:
A lovely mid-length par 4 with a very unfortunate cart path:
My visit: August 2012
My overall rating: 4.5
Rating Trend: NEUTRAL- -- Langford's features remain here, waiting to be brought to life. Unfortunately, status quo is the most likely future.
