Apart from Martin Hawtree's involvement at Lahinch, I don't believe this distinguished family name in architecture has been mentioned much on this site.

While Fred Hawtree's Aspects of Golf Course Architecture 1889-1924 makes for a fine read, has anyone actually played much of their work? Was it thumbs up or down?

I hear that there is a new Martin Hawtree course that has just opened in Delhi, India.  

All I know is that it is "links style" in form which will be very different from anything else in India which has typically courses with flat feature less fairways and shallow bunkers

Fred W. Hawtree, son of Fred G. Hawtree designed exactly one course in the U. S.. Mount Mitchell GC near Burnsville (and Mount Mitchell), NC, is one of the best kept secrets in NC. It is public/resort but is not easy to get to. It is located in a valley near Mt. Mitchell, and does not have the severe terrain you might expect.  The fees are modest and it is a fine venue for a modest budget outing.  I know a group of guys who have had outings there twice a year for the past 20 years or so.

Ran, below is a list of some of the courses designed or altered by the Hawtrees as per their website http://www.hawtree.co.uk. I am actually a member of a Martin Hawtree designed course in the UK called Bearwood Lakes and have played a few Hawtree designs in Mallorca.  Bearwood Lakes is not bad although they have not really used all the natural features of the land.  As far as I can recall the Mallorca courses were not very memorable. I am not familiar with the other courses they designed. It seems they also did alterations at Birkdale, Portmarnock, Leven and Royal Mid Surrey.

My wife and I used to visit Mt. Mitchell quite frequently.  It is owned by Jim Floyd and Lee King.  I believe Floyd's father was a journalist who knew Fred Hawtree and induced him to come to the United States to desigrn Mt. Mitchell.  The only ways to get to Mt. Mitchell are to take roads I(either south from outside Burnsville, or north from I-40 east of Asheville) and drive until you give up hope, and then drive some more.  There are several very nice condos affiliated with the course.  In the fall, the course and environs are spectacularly beautiful.  The course itself has a splendid variety of holes and, on the back nine, Nos. 12 and 13 (both long par 4s) and 14 (a par 3 over a river) are outstanding.  The greens are very challenging, and some of them are three-tiered.   I believe Martin Hawtree then designed Reems Creek, about 15 miles north of Asheville, for Floyd and King.  It is a bit overcooked with its shaping, but, all in all, a very interesting challenge.  Both are open to the public.
