Best Par 3 Courses
« on: November 10, 2011, 03:32:59 PM »
Not to hijack the Bandon Preserve thread .....

What Criteria would there be beyond the variety from hole?  flexibility (angle - meaning very diffrent tee boxes, length, flagstick location) of day to day set up?

Do the PV and ANGC par 3's surpass Bandon's?

One of the best par 3 courses in the world is at Hamilton Farm in NJ.
It is a rated 18 track with great variety in length and beautiful par 3s.
I think its a Hurdzan Fry Design.

Pine Valley's Short Course is great because it offers up so many of the great shots from the original course.
It's a great place to play since it doesn't contain the same pressures as the big course.

I really like World Woods short course and thought that was a great way to warm up for 18 Holes.

Friar's Head has a neat little short, pitch and putt-type course.

I haven't seen it, but as mentioned at another thread, Colorado Golf Club too.

Oxmoor valley.  Yes, 16 of the holes are down hill but great variety and some very interesting green complexes.

Kanawha

Kanawha is a cool place.  A quirky set of par 3s.  Great walk around the yard.  Great practice area.  The course can be played nicely with four clubs; I would use gap/sand wedge, 7-iron, 5- or 7-wood, and putter.

Don't forget Shorty's at Bandon!  GREAT FUN when it is open and FREE!

Foxhills in Surrey, UK - directly across the street from ultra-exclusive Queenwood - has a really fun and challenging 9 hole short course as well with a couple crackers!  This is Bernard Gallacher's home club which has two full 18's and is a quasi-heathland course with some really good holes...but nothing compared to it's incredible neighbors - Sunningdale, Berkshire, Wentworth, etc. etc. etc.

Mission Hills has 2 quality par 3 courses.

One is a replica par three course at the original MH.  Bonus points bx of the Dell hole.

The second is at Haikou and is called stepping stone. Even in tropical conditions and with most holes between 100-140 yards it's still really really fun to play.

Both these courses should get more play but they are both located far away from the clubhouse and the concept of nicking out for a few holes with a beer and a few clubs is not yet encouraged.

The Short Course at Magnolia Grove (RTJ Trail) in Mobile, Ala. is one of the best I have played.  It is so good we used to use it in qualifying for my college golf team.

I honestly can say that I did not enjoy any par 3 as much as I enjoyed Shortys.  That is just a great walk in the later afternoon and totally unpretentious - plus the green complexes are really good.  No trip to Bandon is complete without playing a round at Shorty's with 3-4 clubs and some good libations.  Great course for drinking games.

Hamilton Farms' looks great, though I've walked it and not played it.

I thoroughly enjoy the short course at Grand National on the Jones Trail.  If you pick a set of tees (there are 5 or 6) the distances can get repetitive.  So we would always play matches where whoever won the previous hole got to select the tees for the next hole.

What's the one at World Woods like? I've been meaning to get down there.  I've heard great things about the two championship courses and didn't even know they had a short course.

Lahontan in Lake Tahoe has a pretty good one also.

The best I have played is Pine Valley.  Olympic Clubs was pretty good until they messed it up.  Hamilton Farms looks fantastic.

Respectfully, the par 3 course at the Olympic Club is a special place in a very special city. The hang gliders, the Pacific Ocean and those Cypress Trees take ones breath away.

Upon reflection, I think Ballyneal might be the best par 3 course in the world, should one elect to tee it up on every hole within range of the green.

Have to agree on Hamilton Farm.  The Hickory course is, indeed, a Hurzdan Fry design and it's incredible.  Very little play.  The opening hole is 210, over a canyon...so it's  not a pitch and putt.  The 17th is a downhill 230-yard shot to a very interesting green.  The shortest holes are the 9th and 11th at near 125yds.  The greens are smaller than the big course at Hamilton Farm but have just as much, if not more, contour.   If you miss a green on the Hickory, you  better bring a good chipping game.  In a cart, you can play the Hickory, in a foursome, in 2 hours.

It seems that the criteria for a par 3 course depends on how good the regular course is. So if you are Olympic or Pine Valley, then your par 3 is great because of its proximity to a world class course.

It would be interesting to develop a list of the top 10 par 3 courses in the world.

My favorite is Lake Oswego because I broke 60 there with Jeff Doerr. But most of the par 3 courses I have played have flat greens and are unmemorable.

I also broke something on the Lake Oswego course. Sadly, it was my rental club.

Clean strike of the golf ball --> partial rupture of the steel shaft --> lump on my skull where the head of the club struck me.
