Dear George,

I would move first base a foot farther out to eliminate all those close plays the umpires struggle with.

Sincerely,

I'd secure all funding for David E's El Boqueron...Charlie G's course in MN...the one in a seam of sand in GA that Paul Cowley has wanted to build...Chip G's Outer Banks dunes course...my St. Albert's (selfishly) and any and all other GCAers' dream courses. That's what I'd do.

Eric,

One dream course is Rob Rigg's walking only course in Portland.

I would outlaw practice swings, and hopefully eliminate the 4 hour round in the process.

I'd fly up to Long Island and play National, then eat lunch, then go over to Shinny, have a couple drinks on the patio as the sun sets.  Then I would video conference all the decision makers at my club, and they would see where I am of course, and tell them all the trees that need to be taken down.  And they would do it!

Wow what a nice day!

Do away with bunker rakes (and hire a bunch of sheep to keep the bunkers fit).  No lift, clean and place on the pro tours (I hear the logic, but still).

I'd mandate all member of GCA.com post under their real name.

I'd outlaw alcohol on a golf course and limit post round beverage consumption to 1 per golfer.  :o

And, like I mentioned before, I'd roll the ball back/restrict it.

And I LOVE Mark's idea of the stymie.

I would create a program to keep kids that play high school golf but not college golf active in the game.  It seems like so many people lose touch with the game at that time;

I would set equipment restrictions that commodotize equipment prices, making the game more affordable; and

1.  Change the Pung/Divicenzo rules.

2.  Launch a national pr campaign, urging whoever has the Raynor CPC plans to release them.

3.  Require Jack Nicklaus to route a course himself, and manage it all through construction.  (Love to see what he comes up with.)

1. Roll back the ball 15%. That would mean less land required for golf. 7,000-yards would be a stern test, and a whole bunch of courses would regain some teeth. Most golfers would never know the difference if they weren't told, as they never hit the ball consistently solid.

2. Reduce the set to 9-clubs, maybe 10.  You'd reintroduce shot-making and with the ball going shorter, you'd reintroduce strategy. Courses could get wider, allowing for strategic options for the better players, instead of launch and gouge and the maintenance practices that follow in trying to "challenge" these golfers. This reduction in clubs wouldn't bother the average golfer either, in fact, it would probably make the game easier by simplifying it.

With a couple easy moves, golf courses would become more interesting, challenge restored to the game, to classic courses and we'd require less land for future development.

How would the courses get built, and be ready for play, in a day?

Read the question, people.

I'd outlaw walking and make everyone ride.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

With the power I'd possess, the abilty to direct a few million dollars into some bank accounts would be inconsequential. Take only a phone call. Once the courses were fully funded, Dr. Jones, my day as King would be at an end.

12 minute tee times rather than 8 minute at Bethpage complex. 20 handicap or less on The Red, 15 or less on The Black. 5 handicap or less to play any back tee. When you reach double par on a hole in strokes, pick-up. No carts on Red and Black that day. Let people see how great it could be with less people on the courses and the right players on the right courses.

If you're only king for a day, then whatever rules changes you'd put in could be erased the next day. So they'd be worthless.

There might be ways around that.  e.g., as king you could fire everyone currently at the USGA and R&A.  Appoint your own officers, who take your point of view.

Even without that, it's not 100% sure your rules changes would get erased the next day.  Wouldn't that require the rules orgs to meet, discuss, vote, etc.?  And inertia being what it is, they might go along with the new rules.

JC: you couldn't complete new courses.  But you could set the design/construction process in motion.  With the right contracts and financing, the courses might get completed.  That 2nd Cape Kidnappers course Doak teased us with would be high on my list.

Just some Friday afternoon silliness, as I sit waiting for a client to show up.

Use your power on ONE thing golf related - the game, the Rules, architecture - your choice. Defend your choice wisely.

Please try to be a little more creative than playing Augusta...

 :)

While I firmly believe that private institutions have the right to remain firmly private, somehow it still strikes me as wrong that so many great courses are closed to keen golfers.  Therefore, I would make an offer that all private clubs couldn't refuse to open their doors to public play on a regular basis (a set number of tee times a week) - of course for the appropriate green fee.

Perhaps if the majority of the great unwashed would show some respect, a modicum of commitment, full understanding as well as been able to appreciate, as well as honour the basics of Course Etiquette then we might see the doors opening, or at least being unlocked.

But while comments like that by JC Jones – quote came from another topic -he declared

The good news is the next time I head out to play "Jones-ball," I'll be doing so whilst riding on a cart, drinking an ice cold beer and listening to country music before during and after my shot. I'll make sure to toast you when I crack open the first can.

Who would blame the Private clubs for their current policies.

As you know, we are luck in GB that we have the opportunity of playing nearly every course in the land, all it takes is just a little common sense and some manners.

For the Private Clubs to open their doors requires a commitment from those seeking access. As per this site many of the younger generation clearly lack understand in the game and do not seem to consider Course Etiquette has a place in the modern game.

We have to be responsible for our actions, we have to be seen to understand or possible suffer the consequences of our actions and be considered as ignorant. We reap what we sow, a saying that is generally lost on the 20 to 40 year olds.

I most certainly advocate an open door policy, however we need to be seen that we can be trusted – but can we, when we do not even respect let alone honour the traditions of the game.

Melvyn

I would fire the tour head and staff. Then change the mindset of tour. Reward winning and make average just getting by rather than rich. Send Rees long trip to Siberia. Then let architecture have more to do with Open courses. Reduce the staff by 75% at both places. The USGA and PGA are like the government now. It would be 9:30AM by now, so time to go play 36.
