The ones I've played, and love them all.....

Brutal to edit down from 26 to 18.   :'(

Bandon Dunes
Pacific Dunes
Old Macdonald

Royal Dornoch
Nairn
Elie
Crail Balcomie
Crail Craighead
Lundin Links
St Andrews Old
St Andrews New
North Berwick West Links
Muirfield

Princes
Royal St Georges
Royal Cinque Ports
Littlestone
Rye
Royal Liverpool
Wallasey
Burnham & Berrow

Royal Porthcawl
Pennard

Royal Portrush Valley
Castlerock
Royal County Down  (just walked in the Walker Cup)
Ardglass

Ace

Elie keeps ringing in me ears.  Why have I never been there?  So many people talk it up that it has become an absolute MUST for me.

I am surprised so many listed Littlestone.  I have played it sparingly over the years and I always wanted to go back in a vague sort of way, but maybe I need to make a point to return.

Bill,

No, not an oversight.  It was in my first draft list.  Then I realised I had forgotten Cruden Bay.  I was tempted to leave CB off just for Antony Gray but decided that wouldn't be right.  There are other courses that aren't on my list that I'd love to put on there, I'm astonished Carnoustie didn't make the cut and Goswick deserves more recognition thatn it gets.  In the end, I came down to deciding between Elie and Balcomie.  Now I love them both but settled on Elie, maybe because I'm a Crail member (if that makes any sense!)  On another day I'd have a different list.  Rye may not always make it, perhaps B&B or Saunton may go.  Fact is there are probably 25 courses with a claim to be on the list.

I agree about the quality of some of the holes on Craighead, by the way, though some of the pasture land holes are excellent as well (6 is a very good par 5, 7 as tough a medium length par 3 as could be asked for).  10, for instance, is a very, very good driveable par 4.  I've almost been tempted to suggest that Craighead deserves a place in the top post '95 discussion going on.  I know of at least one former denizen of these parts and an experienced rater to boot who prefers Craighead to Kingsbarns.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

No real order but at the moment my favourite 18 are;

North Berwick
The Old Course
Royal County Down
Muirfield
Royal Dornoch
NGLA
Portrush Dunluce
Turnberry
Carnoustie
The Renaissance Club
Gullane 1
Maidstone
St. Andrews New
Kingsbarns
Gullane 2
Elie
Dunbar
Balcomie

Some might not pass the links test but they are all close enough for me.

S
2011 highlights- Royal Aberdeen, Loch Lomond, Moray Old, NGLA (always a pleasure), Muirfield Village, Saucon Valley, watching the new holes coming along at The Renaissance Club.

I wonder if you've seen this painting of your little slice of heaven by Josh Smith, which I saw posted on the web earlier today...

Seen it?  Its been in the making for what seems an eternity.  I am hoping Whitty brings it over for Buda so I can pick it up.

Jason,

I'm struggling, too.  Could be 13 from somewhere near the 16th tee?

Elie was so much fun I never stopped grinning.  The fact that it was a halved Buda fourball between Whitty and me vs. Lloyd Cole and Andrew Mitchell certainly contributed!

Littlestone to me is one element of the strong links courses spread along that coast, quieter in its way but a fun challenge.  Read Darwin's review in GCBI, he wrote it before Mackenzie opened up the gap in the Alps dune fronting #2 and before the left fairway on #16 ("Littlestone" at Old Macdonald) was eliminated.

NSW can be the 19th as it's lovely, by the sea, has revetted bunkers, but not very links like.

You know, I wondered long about NSW. There is a lot of links like golf there. But, you are probably correct that it does not technically qualify as a true links.

Okay, I'm now officially at 18.

There are 52 links courses in Ireland….

Here is a genuine loop of a wonderful 18 with the deliberate intention of leaving out the 9 or 10 big guns that form most peoples' tourist trail… Starting in Dublin and travelling around the country anti-clockwise…

1.   The Island
2.   Corballis
3.   Laytown and Bettystown
4.   Kirkistown
5.   Castlerock
6.   Ballyliffin Old
7.   North West
8.   Portsalon
9.   Narin and Portnoo
10.   Donegal (Murvagh)
11.   Strandhill
12.   Enniscrone
13.   Carne
14.   Connemara
15.   Dooks
16.   Ceann Sibeal
17.   Rosslare
18.   Arklow
