Scott,

Dormie is a far better C &C than Sugarloaf in my opinion. I played Sugarloaf and have been on-site twice at Dormie. While the conditioning was lacking somewhat when I played Sugarloaf, the bones were fair, nothing exceptional. Dormie has the goods to be a real special layout, about as good as darn near anything I've played of an inland variety.

It's tender, but significant elements the quality of PV, Merion and Pinehurst are there. With proper evolution and refinements, I think few courses in the states will offer better golf than that presentation.

Cheers,
Kris
"I said in a talk at the Dunhill Tournament in St. Andrews a few years back that I thought any of the caddies I'd had that week would probably make a good golf course architect. We all want to ask golfers of all abilities to get more out of their games -caddies do that for a living." T.Doak

I second Kris' comments.  Dormie is very good. Terrific terrain for golf, exceptional variety and beautifully bunkered.  It is impossible not to play a round and see small homages to PV here and there.  Comparing it to Bandon Trails is really difficult because the environment is so different but in terms of the objective quality of each course, it is in the same ballpark.

More from The Pilot of March 13.  First article below includes the following:

“For a limited time, any member of a local golf or country club is invited to play Dormie at the special introductory rate of $145, which includes the green fee, a cart and a forecaddie,” said membership chairman Mike Phillips. “For those who want to walk and play with a caddie, the fee is $160.”
