Winter Handicap
« on: December 12, 2010, 05:55:18 PM »
Assuming you are in an area that accepts scores in the winter for handicap purposes, what happens to your handicap in the winter?  Mine goes up usually by about 4 points--almost doubling.  Why does yours change?  Courses play tougher because the grass is more dormant, the ground is harder and the ball rolls out, chipping and pitching gets harder, etc.?  Or is it the weather--wind, cold, etc.?  Or is it the equipment--balls feel like rocks, need different clubs but don't change, etc?  Or is it your stiff, sore body?  Or is it all the above?  Or what else?

Mine goes the other way.

Softer course = easier course.
Ask not what GolfClubAtlas can do for you; ask what you can do for GolfClubAtlas.

I think I am still so new to the game, mine has gone down the last two years...and based on my last two plays, it will go down again this winter.

Here is an interesting thing about GA winter golf...the bermuda rough gets trimmed down and goes dormant, so being in the rough isn't overly penal like it is in the late summer.  My God, thick bermuda rough is such a damn pisser.

Like has been mentioned, the ground is colder and harder and we actually get some roll out in the fairways down here...so drives and long irons might actually go longer in the South in the winter.

And really it generally isn't too cold.  Maybe starting out in the mid 30's and rising to high 40s low 50s by noon.  Any colder than that and I might consider walking nine and playing hickory and just have some goof around fun.

 :D ;D :D

Here in the Mid Atlantic many of the courses are already frozen ....it is much harder to score and putting is particularly difficult on greens that are often aerated and lumpy.

They turn off the handicap machine at our place Dec 1st (used to be Nov )  and start again in the spring .  We keep a separate winter sheet on our own and play off the trend , which seems to work OK and keep it fun!

I was just thinking about this the other day, here in the carolinas you are supposed to post your scores year round.  But that has proven to be difficult in the last few weeks when the temp has been in the 30's and we have been playing on frozen greens.  Watching your ball land on the front of the green bounce 20 feet in the air and end up 30 yards over the green is quite a sight, as a result my handicap has gone up 3 shots from posting my scores from the last few weeks.

Cory--The same is true here in North Texas.  It seems like the impact is different in different parts of the country.  But we are required to post all our scores even this time of year, and it certainly affects our handicaps.
