You must be a newbie here. Everyone knows that North Dakota is a good golf destination. Many here have made the trip. Some have even traveled to Utah. However, no one goes to Wyoming.

Wyoming is pretty sparse outside of the Jackson area for good golf.  3 Crowns opened up in Casper a few years back but I haven't played it.

Walked the back nine of Valley View this morning for $14 ($1 increase from last year.)  Walked back nine of HAFB last week for $10.  In both cases we had the course to ourselves on a Sunday morning.  The front nines were pretty much filled up with 18 hole rounds but we were all alone.

I'd add a lot of decent to very decent munis to Joel's list - all to be had for something south of $45 with a cart.  Walkers can enjoy dozens of fun courses within 30 minutes of SLC for something south of $30.  And they are very easy to get on ('cept Wingpointe which is involved in some sort of pyramid scheme tee time reservation system and only Emerald and Diamonds need apply.)  We made the Valley View tee-time at about noon yesterday.

Utah may not have a bunch of Golden Age courses but you can play fun golf for next to nothing and no hassles getting a round.

And St. George is WAAAAAAAY fun.

You can play the Links of North Dakota, Bully Pulpit, and Hawtree for $15 less than one round at Cog Hill #4.  At one time or another, both Hawktree and LND were top 100 public courses.  Some of us on the site have played all three, and the reviews have been positive.

I found out recently that Utah claims to have more golf courses per capita than any state in the country. I wouldn't have guessed that, but they do have quite a few courses considering the relative lack of population, so it might very well be true. I've only played a few courses there, but its got quite a bit to offer. It probably belongs ahead of New Mexico, which drops off dramatically after the top few courses.

Without really knowing, I would guess Louisiana might be the winner of this contest--I don't know of a single course I would travel there to see. I would like to see Snake River Sporting Club in Wyoming, but given its financial troubles I'm not sure if it is open or really counts anymore. If not, it might be the runner up. Delaware and South Dakota perhaps follow that. I'm tempted to say Iowa as well, but I've heard decent things about a handful of courses including The Harvester, so I'm not sure if that's fair.

I'm not sure what exists in Mississippi beyond Fallen Oak and in Arkansas beyond The Alotian Club.

I nominate a pair from the east - Vermont and New Hampshire.  And, while Wyoming is definitely in the mix, so should be Montana.

Well, to compare two states, both with small personal sample sizes, Utah and Maryland, I have played two courses in each. Utah is ahead of Maryland with my small sample. Given that the course I played was top 10 in the state of Maryland, I should say that Maryland on the public side is not very deep at all (Golf Magazine rankings). One of the courses I played in Utah was ranked, the other not. I should say that the depth of good courses in Utah is much greater than other states. I would say it is certainly not the worst. What about Montana? Rock Creek and maybe Old Works, what do they have of note beyond that? And certainly Wyoming has more or less nothing; isn't the course generally regarded as the best in Wyoming a Rees Jones design, that certainly sounds like a depth of courses.

John, we have some great courses here in ND.  Come visit us sometime, and if it's late enough bring your shogun.  

Hawktree is still on GD's and Golf's top 100 public, and the Links of ND is on GD's.  I think both deserve to be, they are that good.  I took lots of pics last time I was there and will do a picture writeup.  Also, as was mentioned, you can play three great courses (HT, LND, and Bully Pulpit) for about $150!  We also have several great munis and lots of affordable options.  Certainly far from the "worst."

How could we forget South Dakota?  ND may have Hawktree, Bully Pulpit and the Links of ND, but South Dakota's best, the Golf Club at Red Rock, while a nice enough course, wouldn't make the Top 5 in most states.  As for John's suggestion that Maryland deserves consideration, as a DC area golfer I must defend it's honor.  Of the MD courses I've played, Bulle Rock, Worthington Manor, Whiskey Creek and Musket Ridge are all top notch courses that beat the GC at Red Rock and - I suspect - most anything Wyoming or Montana can serve up.

Montana has several real fine golf course...other than Rock Creek and Old Works....heck, the course I work at is an excellent little course but I doubt any raters have ever set foot on it because it's private.

Arkansas has:  Alotian, John Tyslon's Blessings GC, Pinnacle CC (LPGA this week), Chenal CC (2 courses) for high quality privates.  We have 9 18 hole courses in the Hot Springs Village community alone that if you live in you can play for 22 bucks (anyone can play for a higher fee).  We have over around 15,000 people in the Village now and a very high percentage moved there for the affordable golf rates.  There are several other communities like HSV that have golf but don't have the number of courses we have in the Village.  There is the "Natural State" golf trail as well which has several good courses such as Hot Springs CC (C&C green remodel), and nationwide tour stop at Hardscrabble CC in Ft Smith.  There are not as many "big name" designer courses but I think the golf is decent in the state.

I wonder if you guys are on the right web site.  There is a guy here named Ran Morrisett.  He reviews what he thinks are some of the best courses of architectural interest in the world.  Did I miss something?  I don't see anything from Utah or anything on his future courses to visit list in Utah.

Glad you and I are in 1000% agreement on this one.

UT has plenty of solid golf options -- especially on the public side and a good number of them are great values with top tier designs.

If one were to name a few weak states -- Delaware comes to mind qucikly -- one can name a few of the New England states too.

Wyoming is a bit limited -- but you have the cluster around Jackson -- Rochelle Ranch in Rawlins and a number of others scattered around the state. No doubt it's a bit thin and when compared to UT would be ahead of the Beehive State for sure in my mind.
