The green fairways are dormant bermuda overseeded with rye.  Didn't we have a thread on this?  Is it OK to overseed if the course plays fast and firm most of the time?

Must one know a popular 20's dance in the region of this course?

Given that there were a scant few responses to yesterday's and thus far today's aerials, what are the reasons people aren't commenting?  No good double entendre clues to make?  Don't know the courses or can't figure them out from the clues?  Not enough "biggies"?  Is the AOTD getting old?

I can take honesty.  Sometimes.   ::)

Scott,

I was hoping you would be able to get an aerial of this course......having played it last fall and again in three weeks.  You get some appreciation of what the architects were trying to do there but it's really interesting from ground view.

I love AOTD.  I just don't say anything when I have absolutely no ideas re the course. That occurs for me about 1/2 the time, like yesterday and today!

I played it last month (a hint for those who read that thread) and loved it.  

Cut out of the aerial are the water immediately behind #3 (upper left corner) and the driving range literally next to the first tee.  Actually, they weren't cut out, they just weren't captured in the first place.

I never comment on AOTD because I don't know any of the courses but I do view every one several times a day because they are very enjoyable.  Just look at the views for a one day topic...yesturday 344...this speaks for itself.    Did I mispell that word cause it can't have "turd" in the middle...No wonder me and my 6 year old get along so well.

Interesting seeing this from above.  Many of those fairway bunkers create a big depth perception problem on the ground, which I like.

The race to guess the course favored those who were logged in at approx 9:00 EST.  West coasters and international folks, not to mention those who just can't log in at that time get screwed.  I think talking about specific features is a great idea, but is rarely done.

Before I run off until 1:30, TomS had the right idea.  Remember where Bermuda hails.  Maybe I need to balance things out, but this is the 4th aerial shown from this state already.

Scott, I'm like Craig, I go right for this AOTD along with the morning coffee.  I feel like I got a false start if I didn't get a chance to at least view the AOTD once and maake a guess before going on to other things.  I had to be away yesterday and must go back and look at what I missed.

As for today's and the entire question of AOTD, I say we take a vote:  All in favor say yea, all opposed say nay.  Clearly the yeas have it today!  ;)

Yea  ;D It Doesn't matter what time you post these darn things for many of us West Coasters!  With the exception of this delight, most of us haven't played the eastern gems posted here!

This is the one and only Yeamans Hall, in Hanahan, SC, just north of Charleston ("popular 20's dance").  Seth
Raynor.  There was a quite recent renovation here recently which brought back the square-fronted greens that are not in this aerial.  Quite a few of the greenside bunkers are VERY deep.

Most fairway bunkers are legitimate 1/2 stroke penalties as the high lips prevent much advancement forward.

The Biarritz at the bottom (#16) has the swale in front of the green in stead of in the middle.  There is a ridge that runs through the middle of the green from front to back, dividing it into two greens.  

You get to drive right by the Redan 6th on the way for a nice preview of what's to come.  Very high banked green.

The same member of last week's Ross course is also a member here.

Shooter, I really don't think the water pond or river are integral to the design whatsoever.  The river looks nice as the background of green #8 and behind the tee on 9.  The pond infront of the tee on 7 is irrigation extra storage capacity, I think.  It is nothing tied to the design concept at all.  They have a sign there saying beware of Ali, but I think it may be more in jest than a lair for a gator.  This course really oozes of old plantation land atmosphere from the drive up the dirt road under the stately trees overhanging with spanish moss, to the pier-docks where you can imagine the old cotton barges coming in to load.  The course is just rich in atmosphere with no need for waterscapes...

I follow what you say, perhaps this land didn't lend well to the use of the river or pond. My experience with Raynor shows his ability to use these features more than he did at this site (see Creek and Fishers). Not a bitch, just a comment. Don't you see some great holes that could have been built using the pond and river? I'm sure this course is as great as you say, I was so close to playing it a couple of months ago, if only for more time.

Shooter, I really don't see any great asset that the river offers to suggest a routing hard by the river bank in this case.  The river bank is straight there behind 8 green and 9 tee.  I don't think the straight riverbank edge would lend anything to creative hole design. Then there is the marsh behind 3 green that is a backdrop, but off of the property.  I think what Raynor had here was a sandy soil nob of good ground in a rolling wooded setting.  I think it must be rare for that area of generally low lands.  The beauty in it is that it is parkland and a relief to the monotonous low marshy country of the region.
