I bet you Dixie guys like seeing Palmetto get in on the action for the classic list.

My beloved Brookside has slipped a few spots, but it's just a list.  :)

I wonder why Sutton Bay has slipped so much?  Used to be as high as 13, I think.

Can anyone explain why Fox Chapel dropped 8 spots in the rankings?  I played the course at the end of the summer, and I could not believe how good it is.  Frankly, I see no discernible difference between Fox Chapel and Yeamans Hall in terms of quality.  Yet Yeamans is almost 50 spots higher and 0.6 points higher.  I prefer the rugged look at Yeamans to the more manicured, Northeast parkland look at Fox Chapel.  However, Fox Chapel contains better terrain and has some very wild holes.  2, 7, 9, and 12 are all extremely unique, and the Raynor template holes are solid as usual.

Also, I think both Yeamans Hall and Fox Chapel are more interesting than The Country Club in Brookline.  Of course, I, nor any other golfer, can judge TCC for this list because they rate the Composite course.

You can actually play the Composite Course, and they do designate a handful of days per year as "Championship Course days." However, I agree with you that not each and every rater that has played the course was actually playing the Composite Course, therefore the rating is probably more accurate for the members course. It's a whole other issue which routing is actually "better." I do however know which one is tougher!

Good point / re: Rock Creek -- major omission big time.

Gents:

Someone will need to explain to me how Black Mesa and Greywalls (Marquette GC) are not in the top 50 modern -- plenty of fat cows in that grouping that could stand a little shaking out.

Does anyone really believe that Whistling Straights would be hanging tough at #3 if they had never hosted a major and weren't on the verge of hosting another?

Jud:

I agree w you on WS -- gets plenty of ink for hosting majors but the course is not that big a deal and they have the wrong Dye course rated that high -The Ocean in SC should be higher than WS in my mind.

While Golfweek certainly gives Kingsley much more credit than everyone else, I continue to fail to understand how Whistling Straits, Bandon Dunes, Spyglass Hill, and Honors can be considered better golf courses... I am sure I would feel the same about a good portion of the ones I haven't played too, but I won't speculate.

I just don't get it.

Are the points awarded to #'s 4 & 5 (classic) correct?

It's good to see the course get some recognition. I think it's as good or better than Skokie about 10-15 spots ahead - hopefully more want to see it and Palmetto will stay on the list for awhile.

What is amazing is the difference between numbers 50 and 100 on the modern list. Very small. I bet the difference between 100 and 200 is really small as well..

Don't know, but that is how they are listed on GW's website.

I wish GW would also do a composite ranking, that includes both modern and classic on one list.

Interesting that The Harvester and Wolf Run dropped around 20 places each.  Both have been around long enough I would expect their positions to hold relatively steady.

Does Erin Hills just have too much construction and changes going on to be on the top 100 modern?

Laurel Valley was on the modern list 4 times, the most recent being in 2001, now it's on the classic list?  In the last 9 years did they discover it opened in 1959 instead of 1960 or after?

I figured that was the case. I actually ran into Dr. Hurdzan yesterday and asked him how it was coming and he said it probably will be next August when they get it back open. He did say that the new owner is great and that he really thinks people are going to like what they changed. Should be interesting.

Would be fun to do the 2011 or '12 Midwest Mashie at Erin Hills and Lawsonia.
