V Grooves and the common man
« on: January 08, 2010, 11:03:56 AM »
Was watching some of the Kapalua tourny last night and was pleasantly surprised in the difference of shots inside 100 yards due to the new grooves.  To me this is a very positive development.  What are the chances that eventually this is instituted for all players posting for handicap, say in 5-10 years when the economy is on better footing? Would this be a positive development?

Jud-

This is already planned to be implemented in the future for all golf.  Follow the link down about 3/4 of the way and you will see the dates

And for the art of architecture it is a great thing

Treasure those U-groove wedges.  Find a set you like today and buy a back up.  My new Cleveland "zip groove" wedges are as handy as any I've ever used.

I still can't make anything back up; that's why it's not a big deal for the handicap man.

Won't there still be more roll-out for us mere mortals.?  Or inability to hit that 60 degree wedge shot tight?  Even I get a little bit of juice on the ball occasionally, and I'm a huge slouch...

After watching a little bit last night, I'm wondering if more guys will try to play more of a ground game?  Use the contours and slopes around the greens more?

Grooves definitely matter for us slouches. I bought new Vokeys last summer and now, to quote the Beach Boys, I get rubber in all four gears. Never could hit that check-up-and-stop shot before I put the right technology in my hands.

Would this be a positive development?

Not for me. And by the time I am subject to the new rules anything that moves forward will be a blessing and a surprise.
