Southerndown, post BUDA, Monday 20th Sept 2010.
« on: December 04, 2009, 08:59:06 AM »
To follow the completion of the official BUDA Cup several people have expressed an interest in playing Southerndown.
Monday 20th September

It’s had a lot of attention on here in the past and it’s high on my must plays.

Also can anyone find an online link to a review of the course in the Australian Golf Architecture no 8, by tree house members Freeman and Turner?

We have a provisional morning booking for 3 tees from 8.30am and the cost is £55 for the first 18 and £15 for additional golf. The good news is if we can get 12 names we are a society and can have a £10 discount off the first round. With tee times at 10 min intervals we can play what ever format we wish to.  Their way of pricing is most helpful because hopefully we can take advantage of this rate even if some want to play the morning only and get on their way.

Southerndown is back along the M4 from Pennard towards London and all courses west. To allow for morning traffic I think we will have to allow one hour for travel? TBC.

At the moment I don’t plan to ask for a deposit but once you say you’re “IN” you’re committed to meeting what ever costs I incur. IF I have to come up with a lot of money this might change.

Who’s “In”?     (NB please indicate if your preference is for 18 or 36 so we can make sure afternoon tee times are available).

I realise it's early to commit but we have to work with the club and so it's on a first come basis. At the moment more times are available but there's no guarantee that will always be the case.

I'm certainly interested, but I need to figure out logistics and time off work commitments. I'll try and confirm ASAP.

Tony,

Any chance of playing Pyle and Kenfig first in the morning - I would recommend this course - it was a lot better than I thought it would be and play Southerndown in the afternoon as P+K is closer to Swansea?

I think this may be too much so the other option (the better one) is to play P+K on Thurs afternoon/evening before Porthcawl on Fri? It is 50 a round if I can get a group it should be cheaper per person. I am more likely to do this if anyone is interested let me know.

Cheers
Ben

Ben and I have been in contact and think it might be best to try and get a group together on the Thursday PM to play Pyle and Kenfig.  This is another under the radar course with many putting it as interchangeable with Southerndown in quality.  It lies on land adjacent to Royal Porthcawl and so it’s ideal for those travelling to Wales in the morning and then staying  in the dormy house overnight ready to play in the BUDA next morning.

Here’s an old thread

And here is Ben’s thread where he designed a fantasy new Open Championship course over the land.

I would love to be there but can’t commit just yet as I’m still hoping to get tickets to the Ryder Cup a few weeks later but I will know by Easter.

But please indicate if you’d be interested in a round – or even spending the whole day there.  Once we have an idea of numbers we can try and get a better deal. Currently £50 a round.

Please put down Joe Buehler and me to play Monday morning at Southerndown.

Thanks for making the arrangements, Tony.

I am going to start a separate thread proposing a Thursday (9/16) late morning round at Painswick, and a Tuesday round (9/21) at Burnham and Berrow.

I wasn’t at the BUDA held at Painswick but I know everyone who attended had a great time and was made most welcome. There have been many threads on the course and it’s certainly one of a kind.  Here’s the most recent thread.

Anyone undecided should consider following Bill to Burnham on the Tuesday. A wonderful links and IMO it punches higher than 34th in a top 100 that I saw recently.

Please add me to the list for Southerndown. Have to find out if it's really "better than North Berwick", as claimed on one of the threads.

NOt sure about the conditions at Painswick, so will change horses to play Burnham & Berrow Thursday 9/16 en route from one of the London airports to Porthcawl.

We will be in the Southerndown crowd on the Monday Tony is planning (that's Buehler and McBride and I think Jason Topp) and either Pyle & Kenfig on Tuesday or Painswick, depending on response and reports on the conditions at Painswick.

All of my bitching is about Painswick in the winter.  In September it should be fine with the expected proviso that the greens are slow.

New plays planned for 2024: Fraserburgh, Hankley Common, Ashridge, Gog Magog Old & Cruden Bay St Olaf

That's what I figured.  I'll wait until a lot closer to see who's in for Painswick, otherwise we'll hang around Wales and finish up at P&K on Tuesday.

Tony,

Let me see if Conrad's up for this, in which case we might join you.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

I played it as part of my trip around Wales.

It was definately one of the highlights of my trip and my choice as the second best course behind Royal Porthcawl.
The openeing set of holes are quite something and the par threes are really strong.
