I also got a close look at the WWII pillbox on #16.  Somehow my foursomes partner, Joe Fairey, looked at the strokesaver and decided the best line was over the pillbox!

While searching for his ball  ::)  I got a good look inside.  It's possible the local teenagers have been using the interior for a rendezvous point.

We found his ball which I was able to hack 30 yards forward, still in the rough.  Somehow we made 5 from that mess and won the hole!

Regarding the cooling towers visible from Sandwich and Deal (the "three sisters") - the power station is now decommissioned but is a legacy from the days when East Kent had a coal industry. Some of the mines I'm told (by ex miners) extend right out under Deal golf course - although they are very deep and so would never have any effect.

A wind farm is also currently being constructed off Ramsgate which will change the sea view somewhat (~100 turbines I think). With this the power station has found use again as the junction point to join these up to our national grid.

Jamie - Am I right in thinking the towers are listed?

Being relatively flat and close to France the east Kent links courses were prime invasion land hence the remaining gun emplacement on the 16th at RCP. Those who slid off the green right on 16 may have noticed an 18" wide (45cm for Ulrich and Scott) concrete path which extends from by the 1st tee to the Chequers. This was an early cycle path designed to allow the troops to get quickly from their barracks to the coastal guns.

Deal suffered but most of the greens were fenced off, unsure about Sandwich but I believe Princes suffered serious war damage.

Mark - I had heard that but I'm not sure it's true or not. I've also heard they are asbestos lined, so would be very expensive to demolish. Surprising the site is around 300 acres so pretty significant footprint. I can see them from my living room window.

Prince's was damaged pretty badly I think, although 17 greens of the original 18 survived and you can see features that were original (some of the old bunkers on what is now the Himalayas 9). Laddie Lucas crash landed a spitfire by one of the greens during the war and was apparently appalled by the state they were in.

One of the older members showed me the remains of some trenches in the dunes, although nowadays they blend in pretty well. Tony Muldoon also posted some pics on here of what look like bomb craters. Believe it or not old shell casings still get dug up now and again.

There are pillboxes at Bamburgh Castle (Northumberland) and Burnham and Berrow, as well.  I suspect coastal defences were almost everywhere in the country with beaches.  The long, beautiful beach at Mamburgh Castle still has a few concrete tank traps remaining as well.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Great shots there, John.  Though I must express my disappointment in lack of "butt" shots.

Looking forward to the Dixie Cup.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

Bob & I had a tough time deciding where in the London area to play for our final round - just too many choices.  We eventually decided on Walton Heath Old, and I think we made a good decision.

Walton Heath has a great heritage.  Five time Open champion James Braid was their professional when the club opened and he remained there for 46 years!  There is a nice little display set up in his original workshop.

During his time at Walton Heath, Braid managed a two at some point on every hole of both the old & new.

They do offer the option for some good ole 'merican style golf.

Just so there are no misunderstandings.

After the first hole on the Old, we had to cross a rather busy Dorking Road.  There was a foursome of older ladies that invited us to start in front of them.  I'm not sure how they managed to get across.

There was an interesting practice area set up beside the second hole. This photo was taking from the tee looking to the right.

The guy practicing was hitting back across the second tee & fairway to the practice greens.  Fortunately he waited for us to hit.

We mixed up tees a little bit, but played quite a few of the holes from the tees used during the 1981 Ryder Cup.  Mark Chaplin suggested I look for these markers and I'm glad he did.  Hard to believe how short the course they used was back then.

Not sure what sort of marker this is, but I liked the looks of it.

There is an interesting point in the routing where the 14th tees of both the Old & New are pretty much side by side just going in opposite directions.

I liked these tee "boxes."

Fortunately, no need to use this!

John (and others)

great pics.

When you visit 'down under', there are pill boxes awaiting at New South Wales GC in Sydney, a ka La Perouse on Botany Bay.

In addition to wonderful golf, we got to see a little countryside during the drive between courses.  We got to Rye and it was nearing dark so not many photos.  Sorry that the first is a little out of focus.

A couple of interesting small town churches between Rye & Deal.

Between Folkestone & Dover lies the Battle of Britain memorial.  We got there just as they were closing, but were still able to look around outside.   My crappy photo just cut off part of Churchill's immortal words.

This is at the center of a walking area that has three sidewalks that look like propellers.  We obviously didn't get a look from overhead, but the concept is superb.

What a view from the cliffs.

Nothing wrong with dressing for dinner.

Bit of a two man baby Buda tomo at Rye when Scott tries to beat me over the links. Just like the ODIs the result is immaterial as the main course has taken place!!

I have an image of my trip through England that will forever be etched in my brain. After our Thursday morning round at Deal I needed to get past London going west before rush hour set in ( which I did). I was advised to go back south to Dover and connect with the "M" system. This I did.

As I was going down the hill into Dover on a six lane road I saw a blue van dart out from the outside lane of the other direction into the outside lane of my direction. I feared someone was having a stroke or a heart attack. But, the driver squared hinself up and continued in the wrong direction. As he got around 1/4 mile from me he leaned out of his van and began to smash the top of a vehicle which was in the outside lane of the other direction multiple times as he went past me. He must have had a pipe of at least ten feet.Too bad Mayhugh did not catch that in a photo!

Thar's an image of England I did not expect and will never forget!

So I notice, Chappers, that while feigning disinterest, you are acutely aware of the savege bat-down we gave you in the Champions Trophy the other night, after a 6-1 series win over here. And Shane Watson leading the kicking at that... Collingwood's mum must be embarrassed!!

I will be doing my best tomorrow to regain some honour for RoW, but I fear that horse has bolted, especially after we blew the day one lead!

My B&B was just a block or so away from Deal Castle.

Deal is right on the coast.

Great location for this course, but seems to be inching towards the NLE category.

Bob & I missed out on the late afternoon round at Deal and took a drive up to Canterbury.  What a great looking town.

In order to see the whole cathedral, we sat in on a 30 min Evensong service.  Besides, it only seemed right to be giving thanks for the great week that we had.

I never managed to catch this store open and thus will continue to wonder what differentiates a piece of candy from a proper sweet.  Guess I'll try to find out next time.

I'll definitely be back.
