A Pictorial: Panmure!!!

Panmure is an excellent layout worthy of any visiting golfer’s itinerary. While the first and last few holes occupy a rather flat and featureless plot, the holes away from the clubhouse occupy a stellar “dunescape.” I played the course after a morning round on the fabled links at Carnoustie and was surprised to find that Panmure held its own in such esteemed company.

I hit a long ball off the tee that found the right rough, leaving a short approach wil no view of the stick (it was behind the right mound). The 6th green is visible to the left in the distance.

You may be interested to know that the two hills on the 8th hole are referred to as 'twa paps'.
Even if you don't speak Scots you can probably figure out what that means :-)

There is a denseness to the native grasses and surrounding in all the pictures that make the course stand out as unique among its neighbors for me, and I'm sure adds to the experience of playing there. There was a lot of heather in the native areas such that Panmure reminded me of the inland holes at Golspie and the many photos I've seen from English Heathland courses. I can only imagine that the course is absolutely stunning when the heather blooms (in a few weeks from now, if I'm not mistaken).

Just wondering but are the entrances to the green quite narrow? In a few of the pics it looks like you would have to run the ball between the dunes.

Overall, the greens are fairly open in the front. The terrain is superb, a frolicking series of humps and bumps, with the exception of eveything within about 500 yards of the clubhouse. I played solo in about 3 hours and 10 minutes, but I think Panmure would be an ideal match play type of course.

Wow great pics for a course in which I am very familar to but not played there for 10 years! I played golf for Dundee University GC 1st team - they held their Scottish/British Universities matches at Panmure from 1996 to 1999. Some of us drove the first green with small metal heads in those days!

The course looks in fanstastic nick. Did anyone know that Ben Hogan suggested a bunker on the right hand side of the green on Hole 6 - it is in a mighty effective position if the flag is behind it. Makes me wonder what kind of GCA Hogan would have been.

We had matches in the winter where the club actually changed the layout/number of the holes - 6 became 12 etc etc.

If you are still in Central Scotland/Tayside Region I suggest you play Dundee Downfield (DUGC Home Club) and Blairgowrie. Pitlochry also comes to mind but may be too far north.

How did the early and closing holes play?

Do the trees come into play?

Those holes are all fairly flat, although #4 has a lot of rumple in the fairway and 15 is a long par 3 (~230 yards) that plays over the corner of an o.b. fence. I believe trees border holes 3, 4, 5,12, 15, and 16, but you have to hit a pretty bad shot to find the forest.

Loved the course, from the first to the last hole it was fun and shouldn't be missed.  You can play it twice and have lunch for the price of 18 next door.

While Carnoustie (Championship) may be the superior course in the eyes of many, Panmure is definitely more charming. Neither was all that cheap for a visitor, but certainly Carnoustie's tariff is much stiffer.

I played Panmure three weeks ago and I must report that the two mounds aren't there anymore. This is how the 8th looks today:

I agree, what a shame! That picture in your original post grabbed my attention immediately and is the one picture among all others that makes/made me want to play Panmure.

It is still a really, really good golf course from the 4th to the 14th, but when I saw Kyle's pictures it made me sad to have not played it when the two paps were still there.
