I'll be in Vegas at the beginning of October and was curious what the board thought were the must plays is Vegas. I know the usual suspects like Shadow Creek and The Wynn but what are some of the others?

Sam:

Depending upon the depth of your wallet -- schedule a round at The Chase at Coyote Springs - you'll find some naysayers on this board who say it's too far from downtown but it's well worth the the 60-75 minute ride. Nicklaus did well there and before the homes invade -- that may or may not happen soon because of the economical elements.

If you have sufficient time head to Mesquite / St. George area -- you get a much fuller range of courses and the costs are generally more affordable. Wolf Creek is certainly worth a play provided you are not a "hold your nose in the air" classic school type promponent type.

If you can swing a few private places I would recommend a round at Southern Highlands. If you need a good public area option head to Boulder Creek nearby to the Hoover Dam in Boulder City. The Wolf at Paiute is also good -- but avoid the afternoons because you'll likely encounter 4-5 club wind on certain days there.

Thanks Matt. I should have been more specific, I will not have a car and need to play early each day. I will be relying on cabs to get me to the course and I will play early since I will be there with my girlfriend.

There is Bali Hai on the strip.  I'll bet the price has come down significantly (used to be $250+ for early morning rounds) in recent months.  It is convenient and you could do worse.  If you get a car, and some more time, I hardily second Matt's recommendation of Wolf Creek.

If you are staying at any of the major casino hotels it's likely they can arange transport to the area courses. Paiute is a good 30 minute ride from The Strip -- like I said previously, the Wolf 18 is the one to play there. Just avoid the PM time frame unless you want to handle major club wind.

Need something closer to town -- check out Primm Valley -- I like the Desert layout there.

One word of caution -- avoid Cascata and Rio Seco -- both are way overpriced and although they do have some stellar scenic moments the overall design element would never be linked to the word compelling. You can also throw into that pile Bear's Best.

If you need a very affordable quality layout go to Boulder Creek in Boulder City -- about 20 minutes from The Strip and has 27 holes.

On the private side you might be able to get access to Southern Highlands -- some of the hotels can make things happen on this front.

C'mon guys, obviously there's good golf if you head out of town in any direction.

Now, if you are actually closer in to Vegas, let's see some discussion of these options:

Bear's Best
Canyon Gate
Red Rock
Rio Secco
Southern Highlands
LVCC
Dragon Ridge
Reflection Bay
South Shore
Boulder Creek
Cascata

Some of the above are good / lousy / crazy expensive / inaccessible / etc.  Just throwing some names out here for discussion.

If you want to eliminate Henderson options as well - Rio Secco, Dragon Ridge, etc. - fine.  But assume for this case that Mesquite, Boulder City, and State Line are off the table.  And I loved Paiute, but that's got to be a pretty nasty taxi ride.

EDIT:  For that matter, throw in the TPC options as well.

You can eliminate Reflection Bay as they are in foreclusure and closed.

I would not recommend Rio Secco as it is just not worth the money. For the same money, I would rather play Bali Hai since at least the novelty of playing golf that close the strip is worth something.
