Baltray/County Louth

Has anyone stayed overnight in the Clubhouse -- and, if so, was it enjoyable?  Thanks

I have not stayed in the clubhouse but did play there a couple of years ago and ended up meeting some of the members and almost closing it down.  It is a great course and really fun membership, they are out of the way and do not have the "big club" atmosphere that, for example, Royal County Down has.  The town itself is nothing to write home about and I think staying at the club would be great fun.

I stayed in the clubhouse and it worked out great. If your looking for the Four Seasons you won't get it but the experience maybe as good or better.

It's the experience I care about, and it sounds great.  Are there any other eastern Ireland or Northern Ireland courses where you can stay at the club (and have a good experience doing so)?

Carl,  You can stay at the Portmarnock Hotel and play it's club NOT to be confused with the Old Links course down the road. Not a bad hotel or course to play though. It is on the North side of Dublin and is close to the restaurants/shops  of Malahide. Baltray is a B plus course in my opinion. Worth playing on the way up to RCD.      Jack

Carl,

The only courses I played in eastern and  Northern Ireland was Baltray, County Down, and Portrush. At County Down, the Slieve Donnard hotel is basically across the parking lot from the course. At Portrush, I stayed at a B&B in town.

I stayed in the clubhouse after playing an until dark round.  The experience was of lifetime memory quality.  A member, Val Smiyth, made it his mission for my stay to be great.  After joining him and another friend on the course, they suggested that my best lodging option was at the club.  They set me up for dinner with members in the bar--I was treated like a fellow member.  Val Smyth set a very early round the next morning which was interesiting because the wind was from a completely different direction from the previous evening.  I disagree on the B+ rating--I give the course an A--It is significantly better than Maidstone!

I stayed at the club a few years ago.  The rooms re pretty spartan and the noise from the bar can be a little loud.  I would do it again but not expect to get to bed to early.  I suggested to a buddy that he and his grown sons stay there.  They stayed and played Baltray and RCD from there and putted til after midnight by the lights.

I visited as part of a large group, though four of us stuck around and played another round rather than going into Dublin for the evening.  I had one of my most enjoyable days of golf ever there despite (or perhaps because of) playing in 30+ mph winds.  If I ever go back, I will make a special effort to stay in the clubhouse.

I woudl agree that County Louith is a better golf course than Maidstone.  But it's tough to compare the total experience.

I also stayed at the Club.  Had a great afternoon round with a member and drinks in the bar.  Would do it again in  a heart beat.
The members were great, found the employees at reception a bit cold and not very helpful.  Thought the course was very good.

Thanks for all of the responses -- will definitely make an effort to stay there at least one night.  Anyone know of other similar places (i.e., clubs where you can stay overnight) in that part of the world (or Northern Ireland)?

Did not stay there, but loved the course on our trip 2 years ago.  Jack is definitely a hard grader on the course.

Posted this info yesterday afternoon but it disappeared.

Starting today, the Irish Open will be played at Baltray and shown on the golf channel.

I highly recommend the dormy rooms at County Louth. There is also a great pub just outside the entrance to the club.

Did anyone see any coverage of this?  I've been away for the last few days and just caught a re-run of the play off.  Conditions were appalling, driving rain and strong winds.
2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!
Still to come: Hollins Hall; Ripon City; Shipley; Perranporth; St Enodoc
