My Favorite Threads
« on: March 23, 2009, 01:23:02 AM »
I would just like to thank those who post threads such as the "Ballyneal", "Kingsley", "Bandon", "Enchanted Journey", etc... i.e, photo tours with commentary and feedback...

I assume that many members of this forum visit several times a day (like me)...when I visit, the first topics I visit are the photo tour threads...not only to see what the author has posted, but also to see what has been posted in response.

Ever since I stumbled upon this forum (by chance), I have spent most of my time on the threads related to these types of topics.  I realize that every member has their own preference toward topics and discussions (and rightly so), but the real reason we are all on this forum (at least I think) is our love of golf, nature, and course architecture...

Sooo...I do read the threads that go deep into design philosophy and such, but I keep coming back to what forced me (in a good way) to love golf, and that is my love for nature and great design.

For those of us who have never had the fortunate opportunity (myself) to play the world's greatest courses, I can live vicariously through those who have...through the photo tours such as those listed above.

Thanks again to the forum members who take the time to post, and those who take the time to respond.  It makes my day!!!!

Not to start a love-fest, but there is so much great information and experience on this forum...it should always be appreciated!

Best,

Frank

Frank, very well said, I agree completely.  The OT threads are sometimes interesting, the lists of ratings amusing but frustrating - and I say that as a Panelist for a major publication - and some other topics just not to my personal interests.  But is is golf architecture that draws me and the pictorials and knowledgeable discussion that inform and entertain.

Of course we are both new to all this and we need to allow the more grizzled veterans their fun, diatribes and idiosyncrasies.  :D

To me the most important threads by far deal with architectural philosophy, particularly the historical architectural (including maintenance's evolution) philosophy of the old days because I feel it informs us better about how golf and architecture became what it has (for good or bad).

I am aware though that this type of thread has a limited audience even on here.

Two of my favorite threads were ones which ran their course before I ever joined the board. One was the Foulepoint tour (incomplete though it may be!) The other was about the guy who brought his rabbit to Pebble Beach for one last round. It seriously doesn't get much better than that.

That said, I like any thread that begins with a sincere question or a sincere desire to share.

Mark B's review of Royal Melbourne Composite has to be right up there. Great photography, and wonderful commentary.

I DO NOT like the really crude threads where people use profanity.

I especially like the Enchanted Journey thread.

I just wish Patrick would tell us a little bit more about how he plays those holes, or of specific moments when he discovered something about a hole while playing. But maybe I'm the only guy who cares about that stuff?

I just love to read personal stories of how golf holes are played. The academic dissection of a golf hole is very interesting, but when you put real stories to it - I just eat that shit up.

Raindrops on Roses and Freakin Whiskers on Kittens...

no wonder I spend less and less time here. (no doubt, some folks think that's a good thing and loads of other folks couldn't give a..) but, nonetheless, time for an OT area, Ran/Ben.

Otherwise, folks'll find a new way to self-entertain.

with all best wishes and a very merry homecoming year,

Bradley,

I'm trying NOT to personalize it, but, perhaps when the initial journey is finished, I'll amplify my presentation by giving you my thoughts as I prepare to play each hole and each approach.
