There was a fire today very close to CommonGround GC in Denver today.  I am not sure if the course was damaged.  The local news is reporting the fire is contained and no one was injured.

If you click on the "sky9 lowry fire" video in the top right hand corner, the video shows some shots from above and at the bottom of the screen you can see the course.  I hope that everyone is ok.

Update:  Couple of pictures from the 9news website that show the fire/course.

I didn't even know that gorse would grow in Colorado.

Wow ...

That is all a wetland area which provides flood control for the region ... the picture is taken from the flood control dyke which extends around one side of the course.  You are seeing the 12th green in the foreground, and the back of the fifth green behind it.

No way that catches fire on its own.  I would suspect David Kidd, but I know he's out of country right now.  ;)

Does this prove that Tom Doak is "on fire" as a designer?

How can a wetland area in the middle of winter catch on fire?

As for this course and the other string of bad luck coming to Toms courses, this must be the Devil getting an early payment on the deal he made with him.

I mean c'mon... how else could he have gotten all those sweet jobs and sites without selling his soul to El Diablo?  ;)  ;D

The fire came close but did not damage any specific playing area on the course. The pictures that Thomas posted basically show the extent of the fire's reach. I was told that it crept to within feet of the 12th green prior to being controlled.

Doesn't really surprise me - the crew ran off kids from the wetlands back there smoking all the time. Might be good for the wetlands in the long run - returning the natural fire cycle to the basin

Bigger thing to me looking at the pictures - Wow how cool would it be if CG keeps the Hoylake look. I like it so much better, and it would be hand-down the best public play in Denver with the fast grass...

Just for perspective this is twelve during construction

We have had hardly any precipitation this winter and everything is super dry right now.  Combine that with high winds and the fire danger is very extreme.  The firefighters are still unsure of the cause, but I would also believe that it was man made.

I'm glad no one was hurt and the course was not damaged as well.
