Tony,

Here are a few pictures of Vaquero, I will try to add hole #'s and descriptions when I have more time.  Overall, I like the course, its not my favorite course in the Metroplex, but right up there behind your place, Dallas National and Brook Hollow.  It is always in good shape and a solid test.  The one thing I will tell you is, watch out for the Costal Bermuda Native Areas!  Every time I have been out there they eat golf balls, maybe it will not be as thick this time of year.

I will try to give more of a hole-by-hole when I have a chance.  If I don't get back to you before Saturday, have a great time!

Thank for the pics Trey. I'll take some this weekend a well. The course appears to have some topography, unlike Colonial. I'll report back after I play. Are you playing in the Bully?

Tony or T Kemp,

I assume this course does not allow reciprocal play from out of state?  I am turning into Clark W. Griswold over Easter weekend and would appreciate any private recommendations of places to play around Arlington/DFW where my pro could call their pro etc.

Would appreciate anyone’s advice.

I wanted to bump this topic up one more time.  I am absolutely not looking for an invite, just some advice on which private club would be worth trying to reciprocate on the west side of the DFW area.  All I see is a big list of names.

Jason,

Vaquero is pretty hard to get on.  You could try my home club of Great Southwest on the Arlington-Grand Prairie border right off 360. Certainly, its a notch down from those but a solid course and at one time, it was considered the equal of Preston Trail and Colonial.  Other choices in Arlington are Shady Valley (south) and Rolling Hills but niether is that good, really.

Thanks Jeff, appreciate the advice.  The only other places I have played in DFW are Tierra Verde, Lake Arlington and Royal Oaks in Dallas.

I have had the opportunity to play Vaquero on many occasions.  A family friend is a member.  It is an exclusive club developed by Discovery Land Co.  They have also developed Kukio, Madison Club and about 10 others.  Most are Tom Fazio designed.  The thing you will love about Vaquero is the service...beyond first class.  The comfort stations are ridiculous and they have a guy grilling sausage on the 10th tee no matter how few people are on the course.  The course itself is a fun design and a challenge from the tips.  I believe Vaquero is the home of 6-10 Tour Pros.  The practice facilities are unbelievable and you have your choice of Pro V1s or Callaway Tour balls on the range.  All in all it is a great experience and I am sure you will enjoy yourself.

If you are in the southern part of Arlington, and don't mind a public, you could try Tangleridge in S Grand Prairie.  It was always one of my personal favorite designs.

Jason-

You should check out Timarron in Southlake.   I believe it was Byron Nelson's only design and certainly worth a look.  I think they are pretty open to reciprocal club play.  The club is about 10-15 minutes from DFW airport.

John,

there are several designs in different eras where Byron was said to collaborate - He worked with Ralph Plummer in the 50-60's (including Preston Trail and Great Southwest.  There is a good video of him desribing PT and giving most credit to Plummer and I spoke with him about GSW - he said the mounds in front of 2 green were his idea and the planting of many Crepe Myrtles to replicate ANGC was also his idea)

Later, he worked with Joe Finger and was also the nameplate on the descendant organization of Finger/Dye/Spann.  That is how is name is attached to Timarron. Its a good course and 99% Ken Dye (or Baxter Spann)

Later yet, he joined forces with DA Wiebring, and they have some courses in Japan with his name attached, and a few in DFW, like Bridlewood in Flower Mound.  I doubt he was really active in the design of those, either.

If Jason wanted to go the local legend route, Trophy Club - Hogan's only design (although Joe Lee was the mastermind and he took his name off it in a disagreement of some sort which has been discussed here) would be a course where the pro seemingly really collaborated.  At least Hogan wrote some stuff about what he liked and didn't about the course.

As home to Club Corp, I suspect that there are many courses run by them that have fairly liberal reciprocal play arrangements in DFW.

BTW, I would offer to join Jason over Easter, at GSW or one of my designs, but I will probably be out of town visiting family.
