Looking for New Courses in Scottsdale...
« on: March 05, 2009, 10:26:36 AM »
Annual May golf trip is Scottsdale this year.  18 Wed and Sun ... 36 Thu-Sat.  We are set for We Ko Pa, Troon North and Sunridge Canyon for the 36 hole days.  Can anyone suggest a hidden gem for Wed afternoon and/or Sunday morning?  We have played Legends Trail, Dove Valley,  The Boulders,  Grayhawk and TPC in the past but are no longer interested.  We need some new blood!

Gold Canyon's Dinosaur Mountain and Vista Verde are both very worthwhile. Gold Canyon is somewhat out of town though, perhaps 15 miles east of Mesa.

Try McCormick Ranch.  Two courses both pretty good.  Also Tapatio Cliffs. There is a Hilton there and the golf course is pretty good.
Best

Roger,

For courses that are actually in Scottsdale, ff you haven't played the Talking Stick courses then check them out. The Faldo (Schmidt/Curley) course at the Marriott was nice also. The Longbow course in Mesa is worth seeing and won't cost you an arm or a leg.

Bill,

I think Apache Stronghold is temporarily closed at this time.

Vista Verde is a favorite of many here including myself. You won't be disappointed.

I second the Vista Verde recommendation if you seek a pure golf experience.  None of the infrastructure is yet in place so if you want the amenities of the country-club-for-a-day setting, this may not be for you.  Fantastic golf course however.  Ken Kavanaugh

Talking Stick is very good as well.  36 holes of Coore & Crenshaw!  Both walkable core layouts.

You said you did the TPC already, but I don't know if that included the newly rennovated Champions course (not the Stadium).  Maybe not to the level of the others mentioned, but a VERY good value (and something different if you haven't played it) Another walkable core layout.

Enjoy!!

You pay at the Tonte Verde clubhouse... then take your receipt, clubs and car and drive to the 1st tee at Vista Verde about 2 miles away.  Now that's pure golf!

Thanks everyone!

Make sure to play both WeKoPa courses in you can. I prefer the Cholla course.

Roger,

For arrival/departure days, I recommend either Raven @ South Mountain or Legacy Golf Resort.  Both are very close to the airport.  Each course is traditional golf as opposed to all the desert courses that you will be playing.  Legacy hosted the LPGA event a few years back.

Based upon your course choices, I'm assuming that your staying in North Scottsdale.  Not as close to the airport but convienently off the 101 is the Talking Stick complex with two solid courses.  AND it's right next to the Casino!!!

One course that I always enjoyed that no one has mentioned is Eagle Mountain.  It's in Fountain Hills, really close to Sunridge Canyon and WeKoPa.

I agree that it's worth playing both courses, but I thought Saguaro was much better.  Of the four courses I played in the Scottsdale area in November, I had them ranked Desert Forest; Saguaro a very very close second; Vista Verde; and Cholla a distant fourth.  Damon, curious why you like Cholla more.

Thanks for all the advice fellas.  We looked at Eagle Mtn but the pro wasn't willing to work with "me" if you know what I mean (CCM's can be a little sensitive).  We are staying in Fountain Hills so everything is pretty close.

Counting the days...

You can also get on Quintero and Royal/Southern Dunes through Troon Golf.  Both are long drives from Fountain Hills though.  Good idea on Legacy for travel day.  McCormick and Tapatio are both a good step below everything else mentioned.  Grayhawk has been running a spring training special by email.

Papago is hosting the LPGA event around then.  If there is no conflict, add them to your list as well.

Apache Stronghold is closed at least for now.

I think Papago is a no-brainer.... from the looks of it the non-cardholder rate shouldnt discourage you. It is pretty steep but it should be below the rest on your list sans Vista Verde.

I was a big fan of Southern - then Royal- now Southern Dunes again before I worked for the archie. But my the golfclubatlas in me can also highly recommend it.  But I doubt you would want to do the drive from Fountain Hills.
