I always loved the scene in Bull Durham where Crash Davis tells Nuke that he has to learn “your friends the clichés.”

We gotta play 'em one day at a time.
I'm just happy to be here.
Hope I can help the ballclub.
I just want to give it my best shot, and the good Lord willing, things will work out.


I found myself in a hilarious conversation this morning about the marketing clichés of golf course architecture. I thought I would list some of the most common ones that WE (some are quite common) hear all the time. The fun part is when they are used in clusters by marketing people.

This is done in the spirit of fun – so don’t use this as a platform to rip a specific architect – but go ahead and have a go at the profession if you wish. I’m sure there are better ones that I’m missing and it would be fun to come up with the top 10 marketing phrases for golf architecture.

So here’s my go:

12. I’m always looking for natural green sites
11. I’ve created a series of holes that balance risk and reward
10. These golf courses will be my legacy
9. I’m building a course that challenges ever level of player
8. Architects would do it differently today if they had the same equipment
7. I take an environmental approach to every golf design that I do
6. I only take on a few projects so I can provide as much time as I can on each course
5. I move as little earth as possible
4. This is the best owner that I’ve ever worked with
3. My courses have a timeless quality to them
2. I let the land dictate the holes
1. This is the best piece of land I’ve ever seen

I often say that "I listen to the land" but think it costs me foreign work because they know I don't speak their language.......even down here in the south I get impatient if the land speaks with a slow southern drawl. I get tired of waiting for it to "spit it out" and just do what the heck I wanted to anyway.

BTW, I know a few gca's who will openly scoff at the "I found the green sites first" type of comment.  I am one of them.  I prefer to consider the land in its totality rather than break it into parts.

BTW2 - In this economy, the buzzword for renovations is "laser surgery."

well Jim... we just started by shaping the first tee and 12 month later we were out finishing the 18th green

Another one:
This course is reminiscent of what you see in Scotland, especially our par 4 12th with the approach over the lake...

I agree with Pat about anything referring to "Green".  It's usually people who are acting like it's a new fad, and that others haven't been doing it forever just because it is the right thing to do.
