I have some pretty phemnominal greens an hour from my house!

There are great greens in Orange County, oh Emperor?  The only way you get to the course I know you're talking about in an hour is by helecopter.

Don't mind me, it's the envy speaking.  I hate being jealous of anything in SoCal, and like Dan King, Rustic is a first for that.

Recognizing that much of this is "in the eye of the beholder," I'm curious why Bandon is on your list and Pacific Dunes is not.
I might put them both on (though I still can't figure out why #17 at BD is as big as all the other BD greens combiined   ), but if pushed I'd go with Pacific's over Bandon's because they were more interesting IMO.

I am with you 100%, Doug, re PD and BD.  I can't say it any better than you did.  Great greens / green sites at BOTH courses with PD winning out by a nose if I am forced to choose, just because they are slightly more interesting, as you say.

I was planning to travel to Bandon last week to play Pacific Dunes. That trip, along with a trip to Chicago and Long Island, have been postoned due to cervical disc surgery.  I probably won't play again until August and hope to get to Pacific Dunes in September.

BTW, there are many other excellent modern courses I have not played. My list includes only those that I have played.

Thanks Jim. Hope your recxovery goes well and you get back to Bandon as scheduled--I'm pretty sure you'll add Pacific Dunes to your list once you've played it.

By the way, Kapalua Plantation is on my list too. Really fun and varied greens on a severe site.

I really enjoyed Bandon Dunes, but I can't see the greens being concidered a great set. There good, but definately not great. Pacific Dunes are more interesting.

TPC at Sawgrass has a great set of greens.

On Saturday, I left my house at 11:12AM and made it Rustic Canyon by 12:30 with a stop for gas at a local AM/PM. Hard to believe, I know.

On Monday, I went the long way--5 to 101 to .........I can't say, because I was scoping out a prospect golf site( which shall remain nameless for the time being:)) and I can say that even with a stop or two along the way, I still made it there, in traffic in a little more then 1:40 minutes. It was pretty impressive. I can also tell you that I have never flown in a helicopter.

On the way home, and David Kelly as my witness, we got from Rustic Canyon to El Cholo--Pasadena in a little more the 30 minutes. So if you really want to get sick.... David Kelly is about fives minutes closer to Rustic Canyon then El Cholo--Pasadena. This was also through Memorial Day return home traffic. (118 to the 210 to Colorado Blvd. to Fair Oaks)

If I were forced to narrow it down to 3, they would be Sand Hills, Forest Creek, and Cuscowilla.

Having played Cuscowilla a couple more times last week, I didn't fully appreciate how good the greens were until recently.  Really extraordinary.  No. 15 may be a little over the top, but there are no mediocre green complexes.  

After ANGC, easily the best set of greens in GA.

The greens at Forest Creek were some of the best modern greens I have seen before I joined the club, and that fact did not change after I joined.

Fazio greens , but the ones I have seen were pretty good.

The greens at Gil Hanse's new Applebrook are now fast and true really bringing up all the slopes and subtle contours! They're exceptionally good and interesting greens.

One of my greatest gca experiences was the op to play Desmond Muirhead's Quail Ranch with Tommy Naccarato. On the very first hole he went on and on about how he loved the back right shelf that had disappointingly been subdued over time.

Now, I am emersed in the land of modern courses and find that many of the greens here at Pinon Hills have shelves similar to what Tommy admired.

Down in Albuquerque, At Paa-Ko Ridge, the greens aren't as severe as Pinon, save for one.
The story behind the origin of this green is fascinating. As I understand it the designer, Ken Dye, had selected two greensites for this par 3. One lower and one higher. Not being able to decide which to ultimatly choose Mr. Dye decided to combine them both and the result was an amazing 100 yd deep green with a 13ft elevation change.

Amazing and fun this par 3's boldness is something I think is good for modern golf in America.
