Composite 18 hole rounds (from 2 9-hole facilities)
« on: February 06, 2009, 12:12:36 PM »
In the vein of combining rounds to make the best day of golf....

What is the best example of geographically convenient 18 hole combos comprised of 2 9 hole layouts?

Has anyone done this?  I don't mean playing the back nine at one course and then playing the front at another....true 9 hole facilities.

I have not, but Bill's post about Hotchkiss's 9 holer made me wonder.

EDIT:

Specifically, regulation nines.

AND,

Could this be a way of introducing the public to the 9 hole round, while making an 18 hole option available....2 allied but independent 9 hole facilities within 15 minutes of one another that offer a composite 18 hole option (and could such a course be rated, legally, as an 18 hole round?)

Ryan:

I am struggling to think of anywhere I've seen two nine-hole courses that close together.  Nine holers are usually located in places where there is not enough demand for 18.

I have done this one several times... and Ryan I believe this is at least semi-close to your former backyard...

EATON CANYON (Pasadena) + ALTADENA (Altadena).

Two separate nine holers, par 35 and 36 (I think), both great fun.  I think they're about 5 miles apart at most.

I would recommend the 9-hole courses at Bonar Bridge and Portmahomack (called Tarbat), which are about 20-25 miles apart and each within 15-20 miles of Dornoch.

There are several possibilities in my part of Cheshire with Knutsford, Hale, Alderley Edge, Avro, Ashton-on-Mersey, Cheadle and Gatley all within a 15-minute drive. They are not great courses, but they are enjoyable. To be accurate Knutsford is a 10-hole course with separate 9th and 18th holes.

the only 9 hole combo i could think of would be in the poconos, near stroudsburg.
Evergreen & Terra Greens, both 9 hole facilites within about a 15 min drive.

The summer I learned I did not want to work in the golf industry (because of the 6 day 14 hour a day weeks!), I was the kid assistant in the shop at the nine hole delight, Glenbrook GC, at Lake Tahoe.  A couple of times we played 9 at Glenbrook and then drove down to Stateline and played THEIR nine holer.  The courses were half an hour apart but my buddy lived on the course and it just seemed like a good idea.

Of course I was 17 that summer, a mere 50 years ago.
