  I am eagerly anticipating my first GCA events this year and in looking at their hitstories I was wondering. Why not do a KP at Bandon or a Buda at St Andrews. Has this ever been discussed or considered? Grudge Match 2010 on Old McDonald......PRICELESS.

Anthony, the Buda Cup was just at St Andrews last summer, with play on the Lundin Links and Elie courses.  It was great, two good courses and a lot of the usual suspects who have a great time at the Buda.

It would be very difficult to stage this event on the Links Trust courses, as they control the tee times very securely and the Old Course wouldn't be available for a group booking.

Unless the R&A suddenly and inexplicably decided to award membership to Buda veterans..........hmmmm.

The golden rule is that if you want something done than do it yourself - ha!  I think all of the Budas have been organized by the guy who was willing to do the footwork.  For my part, I would rather go to clubs where we have an in such as a member or special contact because organization is easier, more relaxed and weekends can be utilized - it seems to make sense to take advantage of connections.

On top of that, the intent of KP (at least to date) has been a lower-key, lower-cost gathering, staying in the state of California.  A Bandon event would be very expensive, against the grain of the event, and on top of that, quite difficult to organize and manage (reservations and commitments FAR in advance of the event being the main problem).  However, they have conquered that with Buda - planning far in advance, that is - so perhaps it could be done.

Believe me there will be PLENTY of outings (small and large) at Old Macdonald when the time comes.  My personal vote would be to keep The King's Putter as it is.... smaller, cheaper, more local.  But I am only one vote.

So to paraphrase Sean... if you organize it, they will come.

I also think one of the great things about BUDA is that it does not concentrate on the Marquee courses but rather courses that might be viewe by some as second tier but yet have real architectural and golfing interest.  Painswick, Wallasey, Alwoodley, Moortown, Lundin, Elie and Deal are great examples.  Hoylake and RSG might not fall into that category but for me, whilst I'm really looking forward to RSG in September I'm looking forward more to Deal and some of the courses that will feature in pre or post BUDA outings.

As for Old Mac, by the time opening day comes around, half the people here will have already played it.  That being said it would be a fun day to be there for sure!

And taking over everything (with more help from you and others of course) as I did later... well... let's just say you and I have experience to talk about here.  It is a lot of work.  But yes it can be done.  The key is to just do it.

Re KP however.... the history and local interest would seem to preclude someone just taking it over.  That is, traditionally it does go one year north, one year south.  So 2010 will be North... and of course that COULD be Bandon.... but it shall not be me who organizes.  We shall discuss at KP 2009.

With all due respect, without Ed, the King's Putter would never have achieved liftoff.  Tommy and Dan King provided the original impetus, and you did a great job in doing the pairings once the basics were arranged, but Ed was the main man in getting those basics into place.

   I have never been opposed to KP going out of state, but I do think Bandon prices would certainly make that less appealing. I'm sure the brain trust will come up with suitable venues for 2010, they always do.

  The question is participation. I can set it up but who will come?

  Will 16 attend a TOC, Castle and Kingsbarns event?

  Will 16 attend a Dornach, Castle Stuart and Cruden Bay event?

  Will 16 attend a Bandon event?

   Tobacco Road and Pinehurst?

   The bigger question is will Kalen and Garland attend each one. If so I start this annual function next year and promise to organize it every year.

  If there is positive feedback I will start working on what will foreever be knwn as GRUDGE 2010.

The "problem" re KP is that it's typically more than 16... and thus the greater planning issues.

   Don't worry, they will come. The first KP, my only thought after playing Barona Creek was, wouldn't it be cool to get together with the architect, Todd Eckenrode, and play the course together to see how the project evolved and what his ideas were for each hole. I had heard about this North/South competition that Tommy and Dan King had spoken of, so I thought why not just combine the two ideas. I wasn't expecting anything more than a couple of foursomes. We ended up with 30-something. Don't worry about feedback. Arrange it and they will come.

Since it is low-cost, low key does that rule out Pebble Beach in next year's KP.
It would make for some interesting discussions to play it a couple of months before the US Open.

Interesting discussions are one thing... $500 per round is quite another.  And yes I know one can get it for $350 now.  That doesn't change the equation.
