The Hope - new idea
« on: January 25, 2009, 10:12:50 PM »
I love watching the guys on TV make some birdies but it was unbelievable how well they were scoring prior to today.  40 under was attainable if Stricker hadn't blown up (he would have had to "only" shoot 65 today).

There has been discussion here before about the talent of the guys on TV and that they could play with only a few club but I think this would be an interesting tournament to give the idea a try, maybe let them carry 6 clubs or so, it didn't seem that they hit more than 9 iron into any 4 or 3 par.

Call me crazy, just a thought.

Brock,

It's an interesting idea that might see the light of day as a "specialty end of season event"

There's far too much money at stake, and, I doubt the PGA or USGA would implement a drastic reduction, or any reduction in the number of clubs.

However, if the scoring you reference should find its way to ANGC, I think you'd see dramatic changes, epicentered in Augusta, traveling to Far Hills and PGA Headquarters.

Within the last month I witnessed a 6 handicapper, and a mediocre one at that, hit the tiny green on the par 5, 620 yard 5th hole at Pine Tree in two.
He made the putt for eagle.

PGA Tour Pros couldn't do that years ago, and now, it's almost becoming commonplace amongst strong golfers from mid to low handicap.

Yet, nothing is being done to prevent increased distances from being produced.

The answer begins with the ball, whether it be increased spin rates or compression oriented, something has to be done, but, with the USGA losing significant sums in the recent market, I don't see it.

ANGC is our only HOPE.

Pat-I think if Augusta had not lengthed the course and made the other changes they did over the past 12 years you would see very low scores. I would say the changes made at Augusta have prevented low scores and likely will prevent them for a while.

Something else to consider, in general those courses for the Hope are set up very easy the first 4 days because of the Am's in the field. You watch the broadcast, those pins are not exactly tucked on the very edges of the greens and behind the bunkers. They are in pretty accessible places. That is why the scores are so low.

You set the pins dead center of the greens at Augusta National and the scores would be lower.

You set the pins dead in the middle at Augusta and nobody would finish most holes  ;D

OK, OK. Set them in easy, most accessible positions, like you'd set for 'pro-am' day at the club.  :P

I'd love to see them play with bag toters and no distance markers.  It would kinda give me an idea who out there is a well-honed machine and who has a sense of what a golf hole is asking.  JC

You know, there is a course right where they played this birdie-fest that could have challenged them. The PGA West Dye is an awesome course, as the Q-Schoolers find out often enough.

BUT, what happened? They tried it once in the 1980's [not 'souped up' like US Open courses either] and then they cried and signed a petition never to be made to play it again. The PGA of course allowed that.

These guys may be good, but they also hate to be shown up by a course.

Of course that was just a few years after 'The Massacre at Winged Foot', and many of the same guys likely joined that petition. But even tough Winged Foot was 'souped' by the USGA to bring about the 'Massacre'. The more respect for the PGA West Dye. I still want to see the Pros play there every year. Something to challenge "these guys are good".

Where is everybody? Where is Tommy N? Where is John K? Where is Jay F? What has happened here? Has my absence caused this chaos? I'm sorry. All my rowdy friends have settled down ......... somewhere else!
