GCA Total Topics?
« on: January 26, 2009, 08:34:44 AM »
Anyone notice that GCA currently has 988 pages of threads? Pretty darn close to 1000. I was just wondering if EVERY thread ever made (besides the ones Ran has thought worthy of abolishing) is still located within these pages? Or is there a set amount of data this site can hold and the page total has been around 1000 for some time now?

If these 988 pages truly do encompass the full contribution of GCA material to this site, I some sort of celebration should be should be had for the 1000th page of threads! Seems a significant milestone for a invaluably deep resource of GCA-related material!

That... or I'm just looking for a reason to party!  ;D

I think there is older threads than those on page 988. First threads date back from 1999 if my memory serves well.

1 000 is far behind us. But you can party at the idea of these hidden threads  ;)

I always assumed every topic was still available (except those purposely deleted by administrators).  However, I just went to the oldest topic available and it is from June 2003.  I know that just within the past year I read topics from 2001.  So I assume there is a limit to the capacity on this site.

It would be very difficult to judge which topics to preserve, so I assume when extra capacity is required the oldest topics are dropped.  I suppose the lesson is that if you see a superb topic and subsequent discussion, you may want to print a paper copy for you own files.  I personally have printed two topics in the past just for easier personal access in the future.  Now I realize that after a certain number of years that may be my only access to those discussions.

Ahh.....I kinda thought there was more history to this site than just back as far as is available on that last page.

But hopefully at the very least Ran has archived all the threads somewhere, so that we really don't loose them forever.

Book idea? Best of the Best Discussions from GCA over a ??? year history? Not that we're all experts and could market it to the general public, but Ran could drum up a little extra monetary support for the site by putting out a small edition for us GCA junkies.  ;D

It gets screwed up in there somewhere. 2003 is on the 'last page' but threads from 2001 and before are still on the site here so far as I know. Plus, I think at some point in time, the whole site changed over from something else (long before I got here) and some of the threads were deleted during that switch over. But older threads are in there, just not on the last page.

Good catch John.  I spent some time going through the old pages and I discovered the following:

Starting at the current page 988 through to page 846 the postings get older, regressing from June 2003 to November 2001.  They then jump back to June 2003 and continue to progress forward into 2004 through to page 766.  They then jump back again to 1999, where they again begin to progress foward.  I assume there could be some other possible jumps in chronolgy of the old posts.

I did discover this oldie but goodie posted by Ran in 1999:
