Greywalls

I'm new to this board so pardon me if this has been touched upon in the past. Are there plans to build a clubhouse just for Greywalls so the hike/drive to the first tee is more manageable? I began my college career there this past September and was shocked at first that the walk to the first tee really takes the golfer on a tour of some of the front nine. Definitely a fun golf course though.

Ahh an NMU student, enjoy your time there!  And take advantage of the great golf in both Greywalls and the Heritage.

Did you actually walk all the way to #1?  Even walkers get a ride out there (unless you happen to snowshoe out there this time of year), but to answer your question, yes, there are plans to build a clubhouse between all the rocky knobs behind the 18th green (a site that is also behind the 15th green).

As for a time line, it all depends on when the funds are available.  The courses take priority as you can imagine, and right now they've got a starter shack up on the cliff overlooking the 1st tee and 18th fairway for golfers to check in.

Glad to see another Greywalls fan - welcome to the board.

Actually I am not an NMU student, but the NMU Invitational was my first college tournament. We did play both Greywalls and the Heritage for the event. With 2 rounds on Greywalls and 1 on the Heritage. I personally did not walk to the first tee at Greywalls from the clubhouse, but I did see people actually doing it, and my teammates relayed the horror stories of the time  they were there in 2007 about walking through the wilderness... and then through the front nine all the way up the hill. If there is a consolation prize that comes with the walk, it is the view of Lake Superior on a clear day.

Im from the Milwaukee area and that was my first time in northern Michigan, it is certainly a beautiful place and Greywalls is on one of the most unique pieces of land that I have ever played golf on. As college golfers, our goal for Greywalls was to make a lot of pars, sprinkle in a birdie, and avoid the "big number." You definitely have to think your way around the course. Not just off the tee but around the greens. And I love that the first hole gives the player a chance to add 50 yards to the tee shot just on role alone.

Since we played up there in the beginning of September, the fall colors were just starting to be noticeable. I can imagine that looking down at number 11 from the tee when the colors are peaking, is a pretty incredible sight. Unfortunately I was told we would not be returning there next year.

Keith  -

My buddies and I were at Greywalls this past August.  What a tremendous course, so much fun to play.  All three of us loved the layout.

The head pro, a great guy, gave us a life out to the course.  He pointed out the location of the new clubhouse that was to be built at some point in the future.  I want to say it was on land just to the right of the 1st hole, although I could be wrong about the location.

It is too bad Greywalls isn't closer.  I live near Chicago, and if it were 2 or 3 hours away, I would certainly make a point to get there every two years or so.

If you don't get a ride to the first tee, you'd better leave 30 min. prior to your tee time.  Besides that, the rest of the property is walkable, but to and from the current clubhouse / pro-shop is certainly no picnic.  I assume that this issue will be resolved after the new facilities are built.  On that note, I like it just the way it is !!
