Fort Jackson Golf Club - info?
« on: January 15, 2009, 12:49:45 PM »
My brother is currently winging his way back from Iraq with his unit, with plans to be stationed at Fort Jackson shortly after his arrival back in the States. Searching around the Ft. Jackson website I found this writeup about the Golf Club. Seeing as we'll most likely be visiting some time, I'm wondering if anyone's got any input on the quality of golf one could expect. A search on the gca database didn't turn up much. Thanks.    :)

"The Fort Jackson Golf Club is considered by many as the finest golf operation the military has to offer. The facilities feature two well-maintained championship courses, state-of-the-art practice facilities, an attractive 10,000 square foot clubhouse, a well stocked pro shop, snack bar and lounge. Over 72,000 rounds of golf are played each year over the two courses. FJGC opened in 1949, with the original 18 hole course designed by George Cobb. In 1991, Arthur L. Davis added 20 new holes to 16 of the original holes to make up the current 36-hole complex.

The Wildcat Course plays 5,426 yards from the red tee markers and backs up to 6,721 yards from the Championship tees. The course offers generous fairways, strategically placed bunkering as it winds its way through the rolling hills and South Carolina pines. The 17th tee offers the player a beautiful view of the Columbia, SC skyline.

The Old Hickory Course, though not demanding by its length, is routed over lakes and wetland areas and
rewards accurate tee shots. The red tees play 5,164 yards, while the championship tees measure 6,624 yards. The Old Hickory Course hosted the 1998 All Army Golf Trials Camp."

I've not played there but one of the courses (probably Wildcat I guess) is generally considered quite solid by local (Columbia, SC) standards. Gets a lot of play and the conditioning isn't always quite up to private-club standards understandably. The second course is fine but nothing special. Columbia is a considered a good retirement spot for military folks and the Ft. Jackson golf courses are part of that equation.

There's nothing not to like about playing at the Fort and you ought to play one or both courses while you're visiting. If you can give me a week or so notice before you're in town I'd be glad to host your brother and yourself at my own club as well some time during your stay. Columbia CC is about 15 miles from Ft. Jackson just up I-77 in Blythewood. Most people would consider our course's layout (due Ellis Maples c. 1960) at least the equal of the Ft. Jackson course(s) and most of the year we keep it in very nice shape. Send me E-mail any time, John.

I played there in 93 after visiting the Masters and enjoyed it. Rolling with lots of pine trees, one course was shorter but still fun. Very nice club house with all the sweet tea you could drink. Here's a sattelite link:

I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

John:

I'd echo Brent's comments generally.  One course is a better than average military course and one so-so.  Neither is really special, but are great values.

Columbia Country Club (Brent's course) is really solid with the best conditioned greens in the area.  I can't resist, though :), if you'd like to play a Golden Age course (as opposed to a dark age), let me know and I'll introduce you to our Travis/Ross jewel in Camden.

Thanks for the info, gentlemen, and the generous invitations. My brother is, so far, an indifferent, occasional golfer so I'm not sure how many different courses he can be talked into playing. But personally I will most certainly keep your offers in hand.    :)

John,

You certainly won't be out of luck if you only play at Ft. Jackson during your visit. But if you do get a chance for a CGA-oriented side trip while you're here, take Jamey up on Camden. It has more CGA interest than the rest of the courses in the greater Columbia area combined and is a blast to play. Just bring your good putter!

Thanks Brent.
