dream GCA match: Chicago v Philly!
« on: January 09, 2009, 09:56:55 AM »
the banter on another thread makes me wonder:  could this ever be arranged?  a trip by one contingent to the other to play some of the great courses there, followed by a visit to the other one after that?

i think it would be great fun and would do help however i could to make  it happen
199 played, only Augusta National left to play!

I don't like the direction this is taking. If Philly needs any pros I can come, I have family in the area. :o

Have the Chicago pols adopted the famous Philly quote from ABSCAM?

"Money talks and BS walks."

We can be bought too. I think some NJ guys will have access to our team.

With lunches like that, all participants will be winners. This is a neat idea.

I can see it now:

vs.

any rational human being would surely prefer that glorious hot dog over that sandwich of silly, chopped up little meat.....

and those Philly boys could probably gag if they ate one of our hot peppers

This is actually something I've been trying to talk to Cirba about for the past few days.

I would very much like to host something in this area this season.

Some venue choices:
Lederach
Cobb's Creek
Jeffersonville

There are also a few private clubs in the area that may be willing to host an event on a Monday.

I was thinking a 2-3 day tournament with ample time in the afternoon for participants to seek out other games in town. A final dinner and some sort of traveling trophy (a jar of Cobb's Creek water - taken from the downstream golf course, naturally).

Kyle,

You must have ESPN. I was thinking those exact 3 courses plus Walnut Lane .

Kyle and I have kicked around the idea of a 4-club tournament at Walnut Lane and/or McCall.  Perhaps in some way this could be implemented into this grudge match.  With the losers paying for the cheesesteaks at Dallasandro's, or make the road trip to South Philly and Old Original Nick's for a roast beast sandwich:

It makes little sense to me that we Philadelphians don't put together some sort of national thing for GCAers.

Joe,

Do you really just want any excuse to post that picture?

I think a lot of people would get a kick out of McCall - 4 club tourney or not!

So yes.

What would it take for you guys to descend upon Philadelphia for a few days this summer?

And perhaps most importantly, what would it take to get Sarge into town so he can see what I used to stammer on about whilst playing World Woods.

Bogey

Judging by the yellow cornmeal caste to the crust I'd say that is a Gino's East creation.  I too am partial to Lou Malnatti's, though the cornmeal crust is quite good as well.

Is this supposed to look good or appealing in the least bit?  Looks like someone heated up a jar of Paul Newmans spaghetti sauce and dumped it on a crazy-bread crust with a bit of cheese mixed in.  Less sauce and more toppings for me please.  ;D

"Gourmet"....quite sadly

After growing up in NY and later spending 13+ yrs in Chicago, Deep Dish pizza is a poor substitution for the combination of overcooked lasagne and thin-crust pizza.

BTW...winner to face the winner of NY/NJ vs. SoCal (or NoCal)???? Obviously, fresher, better and more diverse food treasure awaits on either end ;D

As a neutral (CA resident) in the highly volatile and mega-important issue of what area makes the best pizza... I have to say this:  I spent some time in Chicago, had a lot of deep-dish, and I thought it was pretty damn good.

Then I went to New York.

Walking down some street in Manhattan, I saw people lined up at hole in the wall Italian restaurant.  I couldn't tell you its name - my memory is far from that good.  But I was hungry and when in Rome... so I got in line.  When I finally reached the front I felt like Elaine in front of the Soup Nazi, as there was such a detailed and pre-determined procedure for ordering... but somehow I meekly got out of there with two huge slices of plain cheese pizza.

One bite and I thought I was in heaven.  Two bites and I KNEW I was.

So all full apologies to my Chicago friends and relatives (my mother lived the first 13 years of her life in Chicago and I have many relatives still there)... but if one wants truly great pizza, New York is the place.

Now back to your battle with Philadelphia over golf and sandwiches.....

BTW... my two year old son has taken to the movie "Elf" (Will Farrell stars) and there's a line in that that goes:

there are about 30 Ray's Pizzas, and all of them call themselves the original.  But the real one is on 11th.

Curious - is that true?
