The Old Course Photographs to Brighten a January Day
« on: January 07, 2009, 09:26:47 AM »
Found these long lost photographs of The Old Course last night.  I hope they brighten up a cold January day.  Cheers.

Finally, to all the saints who from their labors rest:

Great photos.  I had never noticed but the Starters shack roof line appears to be cut in half!

Thanks, Bogey, but that new Road hole bunker looks worse and worser every time I see it.  whatever happened to the patina of the aging of the palimpsests....? :'(

Mike

A couple of old holiday snaps of my own, one circa mid 1800's & one of TOC courtesy of the Uni of St Andrews a 1939 photo of St Andrews.

Just trying to make you feel at home. Sorry the credit crunch has meant that I can only afford black & white photos. Note the building work undertaken between the two photos.

Wow, I thought it was Dubai at first glance!

Interesting Scholars Bunker on 17, particularly with that huge collar.

Thanks.

Thank you so much, Michael. Lovely photos.

Melvyn, fascinating! Can you identify the houses to the right of the tower as we look at it, the block to their right that we see end on, and the skyline group on the far right? I imagine these are all still there.

Mark,
houses right of tower must just be the continuation of North Street eastwards?
the block to the right - the end gable of Abbotsford Cres maybe?

Melvyn,
S(h)urely photo from later than the mid 1800s??? No Clubs, No Hamilton Hall, No Rusacks. Is that Old Tom's shop with the three sloping white lines (billboards?) in front?

cheers,
FBD.

I have added an addition 1890s photo that might help.

Marty

I do not think so as OTM did not return until 1864 and I think that was before the development of his shop which was rather big in those days taken two buildings. Can't show photo because not mine.

Melvyn,
you fooled me with the addition of the third photo! ;D

What a busy thirty or forty years that was on The Links (the road) wasn't it!!!
Must have been a right pain trying to golf amongst all that construction work!

cheers,
MB.

I love the name "Progressing Bunker."  It is a perfect insult to the player that finds it.

You haven't lived until you've gouged one out of the rough short left into the Scholars Bunker and then tried unsuccessfully to carry the Progressing Bunker in a vain effort to reach the green.  :P

In answer to your question “Can you identify the houses to the right of the tower as we look at it, the block to their right that we see end on, and the skyline group on the far right? I imagine these are all still there”.

I believe the houses to the right of the tower are on Golf Lane, the others gable end ones are left on Pilmour Playfair Terrace leading up hill to the start of North Street. The last set may still be on City Road at the junction of Abbotsford Crescent in the region of Abbotsford House/McIntosh Hall.

I must admit I have never bothered to check what still may be there.

Melvyn

PS  Marty should be able to give you more details as I believe he can remember the construction of the early building circa 1850’s. What a memory he must have, the result  of regular consumption of a good single malt, really good for longevity.  ; :o ;)

Great pics, thanks. I am amazed at how much smaller (not nearly as wide) as the bunker on 17 looks compared to that last B&W photo....that thing is NASTY.
