That is one great all-star cast of GCAers... and Lynn is so cool he counts twice!

 ;D

Interestingly I will be within 100 miles of there that day... but so close, but yet so far.  I'll be in San Bernardino Mtns chasing kids around bunny slopes.  Maybe one of these times...

Tom, I guess I was just so excited about Lynn being there...... ;)

(Thanks, and corrected. I think you need to develop a flu and send the wife and kids off for fun; then get on out there with us!)

Tommy,
Does your master plan include regrading that fairway - you enhanced the middle hump - ?
It looks like there is a hump currently.
Is that your file/drawing?
Either way - it is very nice.
Cheers

Tommy, Im flying back in to LA that same day on a red eye from Happy Valley, Pennsylvania. Depending on your tee times I will definetely be there. Probably coming straight from the airport. If by chance you guys tee off before I can get there I would at least love to stop by for the post round get together. I really want to see Santa Anita.

Bummer...

Looks like I'm missing yet another window of opportunity.

Not to steal the thread, but for any interested in a pre-Xmas excuse for a warmup round to the Santa Anita bash ... I'll be at Soule Park late morning the 24th.

And no ... I'm not sipping the 'nog :-)

Tommy,

Do you have any older Pics of 18? I remember that being a Crazy Fairway... blindish tee shot with lots of humps and bumps?? I think it is in that pic there where you drew in the bunkler on the bottom...

Mike,

A bit here on Santa Anita.

It was a WPA project that got started in 1937 and the first nine holes opened for play in 1938. The history of the site is rather interesting asit started off as Lucky Baldwin's original Santa Anita Race track and glimpses of the old track can still be seen on several golf holes. For example, The Redan 12th is in fact the 4th turn of the old track! The 16th, which is a take-off of #13 at Pine Valley, is in fact the 1st turn!

When the course was being planned, the architect of record was Jame Harrison Smith, an LA County Parks & Recreation Engineer who had been giving the task to design 18 holes for golf. He traveled back east to some of the more famous courses and emulated many of the golf holes he found. He also emulated golf holes from various courses in SoCal. For example, the 1st, is aptly named, George Thomas, and it was a scaled down, reverse version of Rivera #15 and a similar hole on Griffith Park-Harding. The 2nd is called "Dune" and its nothing more then a "Plateau" and the following par 5, 4th emulates certain characteristics of St. Andrews, Long Hole-In. (including a NLE bunker that didn't look like, but was placed more like "Hell."

The 7th is called "Narrows" and it is anything but narrow, and is more akin to a reverse, mid-length Road Hole par 4. The green itself is a honest to goodness Road Hole green.

Simply put, Santa Anita will have you thinking and smiling Seth Raynor in several places, while asking yourself how did this place exist for so long, yet fly under the radar?

As far as the 10th, somewhere along the way, somebody graded down much of the very pronounced "hogsback" on this hole. While I did in fact over-expound on it in the illustration, the reason being was to show the masses that wouldn't have noticed it. (that was actually to a plan to do that!) I actually did two versions of it, one where its more like it should be and the one you see here. Thanks for noticing that though! The idea was more or less depending on the flag, you could get a good angle by playing off of the hogsback, whereas playing directly straight at it, would have been the toughest route which to take. You see, that spine and the bunker, even today without the bunker, blinds the centerline of the hole.

It's simply a charming golf hole and very challenging strategy. Although in its present shape and form, somewhat of nothing more then an open field of grass. But you still have to make your way to the green and the path to there is rather interesting.

Before the pictures, first off, lets get this out of the way. The similarities are uncanny.....

O.K. now that we are done with that......

The long and challenging approach into #16 by this board's "glassiest" swing. (Pure glass!)

The challenging and deceptive 8th

This hole alone, I can say with complete confidence, is the best "unmodified" Redan in Southern California!

Yes, but those dudes are so scantily clad down on South Beach this time of year......

SA is one heck of a golf course and odds of my attendance are perking up. Here's a view of the 10th approach, with the 18th FW at the bottom:

No, your in!

This time, your flying into Long Beach, (not Burbank) and we have plenty of time to pick you up, get to the golf course and play. After that, we completely trash The Derby and get you back to Long Beach for your safe return home. It works for everybody and you'll be placing your melon on your own pillow when you close your eyes later that night.

Tommy, give them some details, and don't forget to mention that the visibility was 50 miles and the temperature was 78.
A great day was had by all, except for the guy who challenged me to an 18 hole match.
Highlight for me was Robert Duruntz talking to Jim McLean on the phone, putting it down and almost holing his 107 yard wedge.  Maybe he got a tip on the call?

It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

The challenging and deceptive 8th

Oddly enough, this reminds me of another 8th:

And this one...you put this in Philadelphia and every GCA guy will be talking about it, will they not?

This hole alone, I can say with complete confidence, is the best "unmodified" Redan in Southern California!

That is in Philly isn't it? ;)

Lynn,
I didn't get to hear about the Jim McClean call. How come he wasn't out there enjoying Santa Anita with us? (Robert?)

O.K. here are a few shots.
Here is the short (and deadly) par 4, 14th. Its hard to describe the degree of movement that is going on here, but we're talking about a drop of some 10+ feet over the other side of this shaping. All of it created. It's ingenious and it works!

Following up with a close-up of the 14th green

This is a closer view of the Redan 12th hole. The green complex is actually the former home stretch turn for Lucky Baldwin's old Santa Anita race track. Lou Duran hit a pretty decent looking shot here and unfortunately, I didn't get to see where it ended up. (I was two groups behind him.)

This is the par 4, 6th and its the fall-away green complex, a rather lengthy one--which drops off on all sides, which is aptly named, Hogsback. In the distance is the right portion of Mt. Baldy, all covered with snow! Lynn, 50 miles of visability? It looked more like 100!
