Turkey haters roll call
« on: November 26, 2008, 01:57:10 PM »
Once again, holler if you hate turkey.  I have my porterhouse steak halfway down my gullet.  Happy Thanksgiving, and have fun watching football, playing with the kids, and getting in some golf if possible.

By the time I finish Smoking a 22 pounder and frying an 18 pounder and carve them both, I pretty much don't care to eat very much turkey.  The penalty for "you cook the turkeys, we'll do the rest", I suppose.

I'm not a big turkey lover either.  That's why I butterfly cut a pork loin and pound it to a 1/2 inch thickness, throw together some butter, spinich, garlic and a bunch of other stuff till it becomes a nice tasty paste.  I then spread it on the loin, roll and tie it up and bake until it becomes one of the best Thanksgiving meals to digest while I watch my Detroit Lions lose big to the Tenn. Titans... :P

I used to hate turkey until last year a friend of our family fried a turkey for us and it was the best tasting turkey in the world. He injected it with a sauce and then fried it and we didnt tell anybody at dinner that it was cooked differently and everybody commented on it. If you have never tried this before I highy reccomend you do so.

For all you turkey haters, I found a video of the new way to cook a turkey.

That's what I like to see Mike, that sounds great.  Matt, every year I get the same thing - "You just haven't tried turkey THIS way..."  It's not the way you copok it, it's the bird.  I don't eat duck, chicken, partridge, pigeon, (they actually eat that in Morocco, it's called pastilla.  My four least favorite foods, bird, lemon, egg, and nuts), or any other poultry.  I hate the texteure AND the taste and even gag on the smell, if it's cloying enough.

Everything else is fair game (pardon the pun), especially venison...and pumpkin pie.

Jay,

I spoke with a friend earlier who says she has the butcher making up turchiduck.  I gather its sort of a cross between a stuffed pizza and ice cream cake roll , with layers of duck, chicken and turkey, each separated by stuffing.....  I had frankly never heard of it.

This anti-turkey thing must be gaining traction.  ::)

I usually have the gang of about 28-32 here and make a couple of turkeys with 2 different kinds of stuffings.  And, I always have a first course of penne with marinara sauce before launching into the traditional fare.  But, this year my relatives are splitting into two groups, and both groups decided against turkey!  If they were replacing it with various wild game, and still keeping with a theme of Pilgrim's Thanksgiving, I'd be OK with that.  But one is doing baked ham and pork roast, and the other is doing BBQ ribs and dumplings.  I can go to Tony Roma's for that...  ::)

Wild Bill, osso bucco is great, but maybe for a holiday season dinner party, Squanto don't do osso bucco...  ;) ;D

I can take or leave the turkey often, but I absolutely adore turkey sandwiches for supper later on in the evening.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Regardless of what you think Jay, I don't hate turkey's at all, in fact, I wish you the happiest of Thanksgivings.

The same to the rest of you. I hope tomorrow starts out for all of you on a golf course. To me there is no better Thanksgiving.

I'm so anti-Thanksgiving, I'm leaving at 4 from Seattle for 72 at Bandon.  Perfect weather forecast.  Can't beat that for T-giving...

Jeff, it comes from Cajun/coonass land (Louisiana) and is officially "turducken."  That's a chicken stuffed inside a duck stuffed inside a turkey.

I'm not sure what happens after that, but it is damned good!

Happy Thanksgiving to all, no matter what youse guys eat!

Ricardo, as you know, Squanto didn't have one lick of Italian blood, where my wife (the turkey hater) is half-Italian and all Italian chef.  And I am not complaining!

Turkeyducken?

Sounds like something Hillbilly Hendren and his one-eyed relatives--all sitting up on the porch picking banjos Delieverence-style--might have something to do with.... ;)

Not hillbilly, coon ass.  And it's "turducken," not "turkeyducken."

Those of you vetoing Turkey are are afield...something akin to Communists, or minimally Socialistic.   ;)

I grew up with a mom who cooked any meat until there was not a single molecule of liquid present, so I wasn't a real big fan of the Big Bird.

However, God blessing Mom and all that, once I learned how to actually cook one while keeping it moist as a late night senior class moonlight date by the lake, I've found that Turkey can be almost as satisfying a hedonistic treat.

I love turkey. I eat it all year long. But Thanksgiving is about more than turkey.  One of the responders mentioned he was "anti-thanksgiving."  What the heck is that about?  How can anyone be against giving thanks.  If you can go to Bandon and play 72 holes and not be thankful, I feel sad for you.

There is nothing quite so restful as the 'sleep of the dead' induced by L-tryptophan.  Why don't they put that in Nyquil instead of the manufactured pharma stuff?  ;D
