Golf in Cabos

Has anyone been to Cabos in the summer?  I was thinking about taking a trip there and was wondering what golf courses you guys recommend?

In my opinion, the best courses in Cabo are Cabo Del Sol--Ocean, what used to be called El Dorado--which was quite scenic a few years back, but has now been riddled with housing, and La Querencia, a private Fazio course.

Others that are good include Cabo Del Sol Desert Course by Tom Weiskopf, and the 27--hole Palmilla Course by Jack Nicklaus.

Cabo is one of (perhaps THE) most expensive golf destination in the world, so be prepared, and hopefully summer rates are more attractive..

I was in Cabo once, hard to get there from Florida and the cost of the hotels and golf is too rich for me
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

I've been there several times, and enjoy the area.  My most enjoyable rounds were at:  Cabo Real (R.T. Jones), and Palmilla (Nicklaus).

As earlier posted, it's quite expensive.  I usually play at twilight, and have found that if you get an early twilight tee time, you can finish 18 holes with no problem.

I've worked through two summers there and although its hot, its not as bad as south Georgia where I'm from. The Sea of Cortez side is usually about 10 degrees warmer than the Pacific. The Pacific side also has more wind.

There are currently no courses on the Pacific, but 4 or 5 planned and two under construction, one of which is ours....the Diamante Dunes Course [Love Golf Design]. We had hoped to open in early spring, but as it was Lehman funded, we are experiencing a slow down, but hope to be back on track soon and open early summer.

Paul.  How does it look for the other development activity down there?  Has real estate taken the big plunge there yet?

Further to Joel's comments, some friends of mine recently played La Querencia, and were very impressed.

Henry.....as of three months ago it had declined a little but not as much as in the States....I expect it has worsened since then.

I played Cabo del Sol Ocean a couple years back after several years' hiatus and appreciated it more this time. I think it's quite well done by Nicklaus with some improvements on holes like 16 (green moved back closer to the ocean, I believe). The finishing four holes are really good IMO.

I have played it a number of times and it is very difficult but very good. I prefer Cabo del Sol but Querencia is a VERY nice place with a very good golf course..

You are killing me!!! In all honesty I am sure it is killing you guys... to have that almost ready and WHAM! Hope things get squared away. I know there are efforts afoot on multiple fronts.

Rick,

August and Septmeber can be rough. 95 with 70% humidity. through July is usually pretty nice and all rates drop July 1, some drop earlier but ours and Palmilla bottom out beginning July 1.

Shoot me a note if you are planning and I will send the maintenance schedules for everyone in the area so you can better plan/enjoy your trip.

Henry, Everyone feeling the effects during this disastrous period. Several projects stalled or shelved but among those a couple had little chance of success to begin with.

The Montage Hotel (Eckenrode golf) project contigious with our property appears to be a go in terms of hotel and likely golf.

Chileno Bay should be opening the Fazio course in the spring and recently finalized a partnership with Discovery Land Co. as developing partner

Nest to Paul's course on the Pacific it seems likely Quivira (36 Nicklaus) will go ahead and start the course(one of those Paul mentions for the pacific side and the only one with a chance in hades of being completed in the next couple of years)

Lots of things changing and slowing but we are not in quite as bad of shape as some places.

Greg...yeah, it has been tough, especially as we were just beginning the detailing part of the course that has been so painfully slow to get to......but the one that ties it all together.

I did say I was from So Ga...... I enjoy going to Cabo in Aug/Sept to cool off....seriously. The Pac breeze helps.
Only 70% humidity makes a huge difference over 90%+....especially if you are working outside.

It matters less if you are just going from one air conditioned environment to the next.... ;)

Hope you are well, hold the Castillo, mi amigo, y las cervezas y tequilas y senoritas y marlins y y y y....

Sounds like all the turf is complete and the course would be playable but you were ready to define the undefined in terms of bunkers/waste area(hate that term) and getting into the fine detail of the dunes lanscaping/stabalization.

In light of all that happened there I am somewaht surprised that they did not go ahead and open to the public for this season but then again there are likely issues that would preclude any revenue generating venture at this time.

Oh well... we sit and we wait... impatiently!
