Mystery Golf Course in Puerto Rico
« on: November 20, 2008, 11:41:55 AM »
Contemplating a vacation to Puerto Rico.  I was stationed at Roosevelt Roads way back in the mid-70's and this would be the first time I've returned in the 30+ years since.

I love to explore with Google Maps/Earth and in doing some research on the golf options, came across an unidentified course/resort just south of Fajardo on the east coast that appears abandoned. (?)  It's NOT the El Conquistidor, this course lies just north of what was Roosevelt Roads.

Here is a link to the google map satellite of the area:

Anyone with any info about this development, who was the GCA and what happened to it?

Thanks!!
Tom

Tom,

Let me see if I can find something out on this.

My father in law has an apartment in the Fajardo harbor and maybe he knows something.

Tom,

Here's the feedback I've received.  Not sure if it helps or not.

"El Conquistador has 2 golf courses and possibly building 3rd within the grounds (but those would be identified as from El Conquistador.

There is a hotel in construction called “Cayo Largo” currently in BK, which is currently mired in litigation, about 15 minutes away.

There is also a golf course in the former Navy Base in Ceiba, about 5-6 miles south of Fajardo."

That looks like it is under construction - or was.
If it was abandoned you wouldn't see mowing lines.
The bunkers are being finished and it is still growing in - or was.
Thinking of Bob, Rihc, Bill, George, Neil, Dr. Childs, & Tiger.

Thanks Patrick.

It seems to be Cayo Largo.

Research shows it was an Inter-Continental hotel project slated to open in 2003 and failed at about 90% of completion.   The 2002 Puerto Rico Herald article indicates the course was designed by Ron Garl.

Oct 2002 article detailing the project:
http://www.puertorico-herald.org/issues/2002/vol6n43/CBYearsCayoLargo-en.html

May 2005 article dealing with the financial problems:
http://www.puertorico-herald.org/issues2/2005/vol09n21/CBGovCayo.html

July 2007 article indicating the project was back on track...
http://www.allbusiness.com/caribbean/4495232-1.html

Can't find anything more recent than that...

Cayo Largo is listed on Ron Garl's web site project list.
