I was at St Andrews some years ago and my brother and I played the Eden in the morning and in the afternoon were due to play the Old Course. But I got a migraine and so couldn't play but my brother managed to join another group.

Have been back to watch the Open there but even though I often find myself in Scotland, TOC just doesnt seem to happen...

Cheers

In Monterey, we drove to Pebble just for a wander round. Just gorgeous, and crazy to miss, but I had a WAY better offer for the next day anyhow so didn't feel too bad at missing!!!
A certain GCAer proffered Merion while we were in the northeast, but I couldn't fit it into my East Side schedule. Had to make do with a nearby substitute or two. Dined in lovely Aronomink. (Thanks again, D.) Will make it back to play both sometime soon (if invites and currency exchange rates still allow, Gents!)
Pasatiempo - not quite missed, but the rain was positively biblical. Five holes and unable to even grip a club ended the joy. The same joy was more than rekindled however by my big Redan brother who was on a personal mission that day which Ed Getka and I were happy to assist....cheers, big bro. A day I'll never, never forget.
Got a wonderful invite to play Western Gailes courtesy of another GCA brother. Unfortunately, there was a Scottish Open qualifier on the day we were meant to play. The member was most apologetic and could only ask us to his other course. Pitiful, really. I've never been so disgusted at HAVING to play somewhere as poor as Loch Lomond... ;)

You are lacking something every avid golfer must own if this is the case.  I have a nice pair of white cotton golf gloves that are made so you must soak them in order to get a grip.  The wetter the better.  It really only rains hard enough to justify them once or twice a year, but it is a must have when you are at a must-play like Pasa in foul weather.

Was given a very gracious open invitation to play Sanctuary one season.  Blew up my ACL, MCL, PCL, lateral and medial meniscus a couple of weeks later.

Tried to barter ;) with my surgeon, but he said no go.

Well, I never played the full 18 at Pinehurst #2 even though I only lived 2 miles away. So that was a big loss. I also missed out on MPCC and any other decent course in the San Diego area while I was out there. Not to mention any number of decent courses in Vegas. I've missed out on a few.

I don't think I ever passed up a chance to play one of the great courses. I certainly have made up excuses to avoid playing a few courses that I hope never to play again.

There was one time a few years ago when I was invited to play Augusta National. One of my best friends had never played the course and it was his dream to do so. Since I had played it a few times before, I asked my host if I could decline and offer the invitation to the guy who is now my BEST friend.
