Bryan Park Champions Course opinions
« on: October 26, 2008, 07:56:07 PM »
I just got back from a weekend tournament there and was just curious to see what the GCA community thought of the place. We played the Champions course both days.

I felt the course was junk to put it bluntly. the greens are a wreck with about 2 major tiers per green which just made it feel like putt putt golf all day. But the greens were in phenomenal shape. And some of the holes are just awkward out there (3,6,11,13,15). It felt like they were forcing holes on the property for the lake views. It will be interesting to see how the 2010 pub links will be out there. Maybe I am being harsh but with the greens running around a 10 or so they were almost unputtable. If the USGA decides to speed them up it will be disastrous. With these complaints, I still played pretty well out there but when guys were coming in with 45 putts for being scratch golfers that is a little over the top.

I have played a bunch of Res Jones courses/renovations and I don't ever recall greens like this. Is this multiple tier idea a common thing for Mr. Jones or is Bryan Park just over the top for him? I know most don't care for his work on this site and I could see that Bryan park could be a good reason for it. Also the only reason I could see people thinking this course is special is because of the lake that surrounds it. There is no doubt that with the leaves changing colors it makes the place look beautiful, but I would have rather been on a boat then playing the course.

You're not being harsch.  Other than a few holes on the lake I thought the course was bland, boring and pretty forgetful.  Wasn't worth the 30 minute drive from Tanglewood to go play it.

I think that Duke and Tanglewood are far better than Bryan Park-Champions.

I will say they did a major renovation over the past year, and I have not played the course in about 2 years. But from what I remember from the 5 times I have played there, I thought it was a good course. I don't remember much of the front nine, so I can't comment on the holes that you thought were awkward on the front. But on the back I thought 11 and 13 made fairly ok Cape type holes. But I did think 15 was a forced hole, I do not care for it (though I wonder how it played, with the second hazard being about 305 from the tee, back in 1990 when it was built, given shorter driving distances, etc.). I can honestly say I can fit into the category of the scratch golfer who had 45 putts. Like I say, I have not played the remodel, but two years ago, it was a very good course to play.

I would say that Tanglewood is much better than both Duke and Bryan Park
