Just saw on Amazon that the Pete Dye book is now available.  Has anybody bought it yet?

If so, can you share what you thought of it, and if it is a worthwhile addition to anybody's collection?  My guess is that it must be, but I would love to read comments on it.

The book is fantastic!  A must-read!  (OK--I'm biased, because I wrote it..but still...)

And BTW--never mind Amazon.  Those fellows have no stake in the game.  I spent two years conceiving, writing and organizing the book at the behest of the Dye Family, and it would be my pleasure to supply GCA-types with personalized copies, and any one of 30 different custom covers..neither of which Amazon can do.

There was a brouhaha on this site a few months ago concerning Richard Mandell's Pinehurst book, and the pros/cons of buying it from him, vs. Amazon.  Here's the link:

This Pete Dye book is really nice and a great read especially with all the high quality images.  One little tip if your looking to buy this book for yourself or as a gift - If you purchase from Joel he can get you the book signed and he also will give you a gift of your choice sunglasses ($60) or a nice golf shirt ($65) at no additional charge.  He is the author and he spent the time to creat the book so I would rather spend my money with the guy that did all the work.

I love getting free stuff and sure I paid a little more than Amazon but, I got a signed copy and I have a nice golf shirt as well.  Joel nice job on this book and I will be buying a couple more copies for friends this holiday season.

Joel mentioned his book months ago and provided us with an opportunity to pre- purchase one.

I did so and it arrived last week, complete with a personalized letter from Joel.

It's awesome.  A wonderful supplement to Bury Me in a Pot Bunker.

Many, many great images, a lot of wonderful text.  It's going right between my Fazio and Nicklaus books; a wonderful addition to my gca library.

Thank you Matt, Tom, Eric, and Michael....Michael, my only regret is that I wasn't in a position to set up the "free gift" scenario when you pre-ordered the book awhile back...but it took me a while to figure out how to go toe-to-toe with those Amazon sharks...

I appreciate everyone's kind words very much.  Of course all accolades and brickbats have little meaning compared to the blessing I received from Alice Dye.  She inspected the book and gave me thumbs up and congrats.  Pete came on the phone, and said, "The cover looks nice."  I asked--what else do you have to say?  He said, "I haven't opened it up yet.  Too busy down at French Lick and elsewhere."  When I stopped laughing, I couldn't think of anyone else I ever met (or likely will meet) that, when seeing a 300-page book that might as well be titled "My Life and Work," doesn't even bother to open it!  That's Pete..one-of-a-kind.  I guess he figures he lived it, so why read about it?

I beleive I bought the book online through Chapters bookstore. I must have pre-ordered that thing 6 months ago, if not longer! I'm so glad to have it now.

Just a quick note to thank the many GCA members who have chosen to purchase books from www.vagabondgolfer.com since Yannick Pilon began this thread a few days ago.

Books are being shipped, as are either the sunglasses or golf shirt that is my special "thank you" for ordering direct.  In addition, custom covers of the book are also available, GC images that will never be seen in stores or on Amazon.  These includeThe Ocean Course, Harbour Town, Long Cove, Crooked Stick, Colleton River, Pete Dye GC, Whistling Straits, Blackwolf Run, and many others.

I'll never put Amazon out of business, but I'll do my best to insure that Amazon doesn't put me out, either!   Thanks again..

I wouldn't go that far, Chip.  Maybe like fishing in a bathtub..or kiddie's wading pool!  However, after this nice response I've received I WILL attest that the name-brand architect, often discussed on this site, who told me 6-8 months ago that "GCAers are not the book-buying types" was dead wrong!

So far The Ocean Course takes the Gold, with Pete Dye Golf Club and Whistling Straits the silver and bronze, respectively.

No inquiries regarding Harbour Town, surprisingly..it's a beautiful cover image of the lighthouse behind 18 green.

Stock the pro shop at Harbour Town and the book with #18 and the lighthouse will fly off the shelf to guys that come down and play the course.  Just a tip to help you sell some books!

I am not surprised at all about The Ocean Course, Pete Dye Golf Club and Whistiling Straits as the most popular covers for the book.

Joel,

Reading the above, I immediately thought of Rod Whitman! He'd do the same if someone ever writes a book about him and his work. No doubt. Perhaps it's the Dye influence (Rod worked with Pete for many years), or they're plainly alike at the core.

I think it's a combination of the two!

Thanks for the deal for GCAers.  My early take after reading the first 50 pages is wow, what an extraordinary journey you undertook to do this book.  Having recently read Golf In The Lowcountry,  I suspect the daily grind hasn't worn ya down yet. ;D

Seriously, great job.  Great shades too, thanks 8).

btw, the lowcountry Dye trip Super Bowl week is still in the works.
