I attended the Buick Classic on Friday, and it seems like a great course.  Can someone enlighten me on its history, design, architect, etc.  Thanks!

Got to be one of the great courses on Tour....I was curious with the strange final day pairings if it was easier to follow the leaders than Tiger...where was the electricity and does it really matter who wins a weekly event...is it a competition at all...a social hour or a horse race...have you spectated at Augusta and is this place even more hilly...cause for knowing how TV flattens the topo...I gotta say that place looked steep.

On an architectural note.....the dogleg on the back 15? could that be the greatest architectural tree in all of golf....short hitters have to stay left while long hitters can take the risk and go over.....I do love trees and hills given a choice over flat and barren.

The course was built in 1922, and the original architect was Walter Travis.  I have attended the tournament there on numerous occasions and have also played the course.  Like you, I really like the course.  I think there is a great mix of holes over some very interesting terrain.

The Buick Classic always gets a pretty good field. Westchester CC is one of a few "classic age" courses that they play on tour each year, and it always gets good reviews from the tour players.

It seems as though William Flynn oversaw the construction of the course for Travis.  Subsequently, he may have been involved in redoing some bunkers.  They seemed to change  a bit later on in the 20s.  Mike Prystowski and other members of the club are very interested in the architectural history and are helping out.  We have some serial aerial photos but nothing in the way of written archival materials to help with the research.  In the collection of drawings that Tom Pauland I have, we do have an early routing map but it does not show the bunkering.  Craig Disher is helping with the photo analysis and he does great work.  We are still plugging away and hope to come up with some answers.

Quirky and fun, this is a wonderful golf course.  No one would build this course this way today - just another reason it is so special!

Wonderful golf course.  Just got back from dinner with Mike Prystowsky by the way and left Tommy N touring Winged Foot to do it. It has undergone major changes from a 1926 aerial to the current one. It does have great variety and a wonderful set of greens.

The elevation changes are not as large as Augusta but the slopes and severity of the elevation changes are greater.

JakaB- good observation.  I have posted several times that the large oak at the corner of the dogleg of #6 (15 tournament) is one of the great strategic trees in golf.  It was large back in 1926 too as evidenced from the aerial that Wayne mentioned.

Paul Richards, what are some of the quirky elements you refer to? I've seen this course only on TV and, while it looks like a great layout, I haven't seen much quirk.  Please elaborate!

One of the things that I really enjoyed was that it's a great spectators course.  I was able to watch the green at 15, the tee shot and putts at 16, and the approach shot to 17 (or #'s 6,7, and 8 for the non-tournament setup), by only moving a few steps.  The fact that there are no "stadium" holes on the golf course gives it an intimate feeling.  There aren't many "squatters" at certain holes, so you can literally be one of only a few spectators for some of the smaller-name pairings.
