These guys ARE good!
« on: October 17, 2008, 09:57:29 PM »
I don't know if you noticed but the PGA TOUR leader is 18 under with a cut of -6.  The Nationwide tour leader is 19 under with a cut of -6.

Is there really a way to keep those boys from going low without lightening fast undulating greens and 6 inch rough?

Come to the Honda Classic in March Tommy.

As JES said, wind and firm greens. Throw in good length rough, length on the course and several well placed water hazards.

This week you've got the best players in the world on a wide open course with no wind and perfect conditions.

Rather boring if you ask me.

One of the commentators said the course is really a par 68 or 69 for the pros.

The ball goes 5% further in Vegas and curves less, so that helps too.

Aside from the majors (depending on the course) , there are very few "interesting" PGA tournaments to watch.

When half the holes, including the 18th, are driver and wedge, how can it make things anything but mundane.

The entertainment value of pro golf is for $%^& right now because few tournaments can stir emotion.

Dialing back the technology clock is hopelessly unrealistic, but seriously, let's get these guys hitting with "oversized" persimmon at 250cc max per head and see what happens . . .

Never mind more cowbell, let's bring back some crazy Seve moments!

Dry & wide fairways = wedge approaches on all "par 4s," mid-irons into "par 5s" for second shots.

They should just officially change the event to a putting competition.

Steve, I would agree and say probably even less.

Today, every course that has 4 par 5's is basically a par 68 for any good golfers with some length. Then throw in a short drivable par 4 and you realistically have 67.

We go back to the same ol' argument about the equipment - it has ruined good golf courses and has made par null and void.

When I grew up I knew that a par 3 was anything under 250 yards and  par 4's under 475 yards. Today you would have to change those numbers to something like ( and I'm guessing), 285 and 520 to be equivalent in length. Sad times. ;)

agreed, that equipment have rendered most par five helpless and that wind and firm conditions make for more difficult conditions in which to score. Nonetheless, they have to get the ball into the hole.  They still have to control the distance and direction of drives that are 320 yards and second shots that are 250 yards.  They really are good.

They are good, no doubt. And long.
Webb Simpson, the rather slightly built Wake Forest grad new to the pro ranks, hit a 400 yard drive followed by a 162 yard pitching wedge to the 562 yard 6th at Black Creek on Friday, after a rain. I saw it.
But the weekend scores failed to follow through with the trend as 24 under ended up winning when the drier conditions firmed the greens and a slight (10-15 mph) wind made a big difference at Black Creek, the Nationwide stop. The winner was even for the final day (Arjun Atwal).
The course is a par 67 for these guys- they can easily hit all the par 5's, often with short irons, and either the 10th or 15th is drivable in almost any conditions.
We get to play it as it was in the final round tomorrow and I'll try to give a report on what it's like for a 52-year old.
