I recently purchased Fay's "Golf, as it was in the Beginning".
It is a very sharp looking book, with beautiful, large photographs of the past & present rota courses (photos by Michael Freeman).
HOWEVER...I can't help but grow frustrated over what seems to be an extremely sloppy editing job, which seems pretty unacceptable for this type of book and cheapens the finished product.
After just a quick skim of the book, I found countless typos / mistakes, mainly in the photo captions and "headers".
-At the beginning of each chapter, all the Scottish courses are listed as being in England (ie Hole #2 - St Andrews, England).
- On page 84, Turnberry's sixth hole is captioned as "Ailsa" instead of "Tappie Toorie"
- On page 115, a picture with the marker rock in the middle of Turnberry's 9th fairway is captioned as the "Ninth Tee".
-On page 116, a picture of what appears to be the ninth tee looking back over the 8th green is captioned as the ninth green.
-On page 141, a diagram of St Andrews' 11th is captioned as "Saint AMdrews hole number 11".
Maybe I'm just being retentive, but for such a beautiful book and from a respected author like Fay, I would expect that these types of mistakes would have been cleaned up before printing...
I still love the photos!
