Edgartown Golf Club on Martha's Vineyard, MA - pics
« on: August 25, 2008, 10:17:07 PM »
Edgartown was my last course to see on Martha's Vineyard. It was laid out by a founder of the club in 1929 who was a former President of the USGA (forget the name) who loved The Old Course and the original pro who was from England or Scotland. It is a 9 hole course that plays as 18 with a variety of tees and an extra green on #1.

1st hole with 2 greens for 1st and 10th hole play

The other green

2nd - par 5

3rd hole

Plays from a different angle on the back

4th

5th

6th

8th plays as a par 4 on the first loop and a par 3 on the back loop

Practice area

Tiny clubhouse with a very friendly staff. My guess is the greens got smaller and flatter over the years. Other than that, it was the perfect New England 9 holer.

Mike:

"The perfect New England 9-holer?" Wow, that's serious praise. Can you compare/contrast it to any of your other favorites in New England?

My New England 9 hole list would be:

*North Haven Golf Club ME - http://golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,25025.0.html

*Edgartown GC - with better/restored greens would be neck and neck with North Haven
*Highland Links - have not actually played it, but saw a bunch. The views are dramatic, but        I think Edgartown is a better course.

*Hay Harbor - Fishers Island - again did not play it but you can see most of it
*Fenwick GC - CT
*Hotchkiss GC - CT (with apologies to my friend Jim Kennedy)
*Mink Meadows GC - Martha's Vineyard
*Tarrantine GC ME

Perhaps the poster from maine will chime in.......

Edgartown was also in perfect condition. We had a great week of weather but they were coming off a bunch of rain and the course firmish.

That appears to be a nice course. I also appears to look very similar to Shennecossett in Connecticut.
Best Played So Far This Season:
Crystal Downs CC (MI), The Bridge (NY), Canterbury GC (OH), Lakota Links (CO), Montauk Downs (NY), Sedge Valley (WI)

Mike

I like the list but I would move Hotchkiss up, just for the sixth green alone! That might be the best medium-to-small green I have ever seen.

Here are a few more of Mike Sweeney's favorite unplayed, unvisited nine hole courses in New England . . .

Whitinsville - Hello !?
Grindstone Neck - pushed into the mix by Geoff Walsh's recent rave
Abenaki - a Google Earth favorite, especially in the dead of winter
Wilson Lake - Stiles lakefront gem
Hooper - Stiles inland gem
Castine - a 10 on the Sweeney "scenic and peaceful drive to the course" scale

I am somewhat embarressed that George Thomas' Philadelphia Schoolish Marion GC has not yet made it onto this list. I have only driven past it once on a Peg hungry trip to its lofty neighbor!!
