The 7th ("St. Andrews") at NGLA is 478 yds. from the back. It usually plays into the trade wind and has one of the really great green complexes anywhere, IMO.

Hi Scott,

I never said that the other 2 threads were ill-conceived.  In fact I partly defended them.

I think this thread was ill-conceived from the start (more so than the other 2 threads).

I have already recommended several great holes under 500 yards (although from the new tee boxes at Merion 5 and Bethpage 10 they might be over) that often play as 3 shot holes.  I will add to that list 5 at Bethpage, 2 at Wannamoisett, 2 at Ballyneal, 7 at Prairie Dunes, 3 at Pacific Dunes, and 10 at Old Sandwich (3 of which happen to be called par 5's).

The 8th at Royal West Norfolk (Brancaster) is a great short par 5.

Though I played the first at Wentworth as a par 5 when I was there some years ago, I always consider it a par 4 as thats what the pros play it as. As has been generally discussed, this is often the problem when technology lets us hit it further, with the shorter par 5sbecoming 4s, and to some extent the shorter par 4s becoming more like 3s? At least we aren't likley to have short par 3s turned into par 2s!

Cheers

James

Few and far between are the golfers capable of completely ignoring "PAR"...and rightly so in my opinion because there is nothing like making a birdie...

...And let's consider this...does it have to be a sub-500 yard par five from the tips or might it qualify at any point.  That's my operative question.  #10 at Taconic is 505, although the tips would have to be positioned at the back of the back tees to reach that.  I believe that Gil Hanse is lengthening it during the restoration process.  It is one fantastic hole.

Sean,

The third at Prestwick must make the list. I just checked one of my scorecards and it measures 482 from the back tees, and as I am sure you know it is by no means a walk in the park.

#10 at Arrowhead in Akron, New York...Tough 225 yard carry over a creek, then about 200 over wetlands to a throat of fairway and a green perched among bunkers, within a necklace of mounds...Scott Witter design.
