Oakland Hills - Donald Ross Blueprints?
« on: August 07, 2008, 10:13:13 PM »
Are Ross' original blueprints / design documents available to view anywhere?  I would like to see how much the character of the bunkering changed during RTJ redesign of the course.

I could be wrong, but I think that there is a routing plan hanging on the wall in the upstairs grill, near the stairs.  More detailed blueprints, hole-by-hole I have not seen.  I have also seen a number of aerials from the 1930's.
I do wish that I could provide you with a source, but I can't recall where i saw them.

Ross's routing plan for Oakland Hills is on p124 of Geoff S's The Golden Age of Golf Design

If one knows the property and views this aerial its easy to see why Oakland Hills was considered a top course when built.  The difference in bunker placement is astounding.  Only the 3rd and 16th were closed off for the ground game which I am sure was much more used back in the day as the course was considered fairly long when built.

Two other things which I am reminded of while looking at this book.

Who said Ross didn't place bunkers behind greens?

Also, when looking at a pic of Salem on pg 128 why did anybody get the idea that Ross had a singular style of bunker shape?  Its  laughable.

I`ve told this story before, but OH has Ross` 1947 renovation plan for the `51 open hanging around the maintenance facility, too.  I wish I could have taken a pic of it, but it was very similar to the RTJ redo plan, moving bunkers back, adding some, etc.  Ross died before it was finished, so they hired rtj.
