Of course Eagle Ridge [KY]. Ironically, GD lists it's walkability as 'unlimited'. Pretty unwise to try it, though I am certain you dedicated types COULD.

Got insurance?  :D

Ballyhack will be difficult (flat out hard) to walk.  Each group will have carts and will have caddies so players can choose to walk the holes they want, but the areas from some greens to the next tee will take a tri-athlete.  Unfortunately, to get what I thought were the best 18 holes, this was necessary.

I am not making any assumptions about whether it not its one of the "best", but I'm proud of what we are doing for our members.

Chambers Bay isn't the easiest walk, especially up the hill to #4 and #7, but its not really hard or impossible to me. The more fairways you hit, the easier it is as well.

Kind of the same deal with Whistling Straits. You can have some adventures on those courses once you get off the beaten path.

I walked Stone Eagle once, carrying my bag.  I played in three hours.  I needed to take the next day off.  I like Stone Eagle.  It's really nice there.  It's very pretty.

Highland Links

Please don't perpetuate this myth ... Highlands Links is a challenging walk but nowhere near mandatory cartball. (Unless you're talking about the course in Mass., of which I have no knowledge ...)

Blackwolf Run River
Castle Pines
Black Mesa
Paa-Ko Ridge
Forest Highlands Canyon

All five of those could possibly be walked so I'm not sure how applicable they are to the category, but at the same time the terrain of all of them would be what would make the walk really difficult, generally not long walks between holes. Most of the walks are caused by natural features that must be crossed but not with a golf ball.

Of the bunch Paa-Ko is probably the least walkable of the bunch. The others I think could be done, and I know quite a few people have walked Paa-Ko, but its a hike. Lakota Canyon would be another one fitting the same category.

I can't think of a course I'd name for this category that was tough to walk over what should have been easily walkable terrain, if that makes sense.

I had no problem walking either Black mesa or Paa-ko Ridge at all.  The greens and tees are fairly close especially at BM.

Lakota Canyon, and Conklin PLayers Club are two of the hardest...then after that, I'd say never walk if its 100 or more out.  Shenandoah at Turning Stone is a joke of a routing...at one point, they make you walk 500 yards up to the top of the hill, and then play right back from where you came from, just so you'd see the hotel from the tee box.

Byron,

I am 61 and have walked Chambers Bay a few times and will do so again this week. Also, the people at Chambers Bay tout the course as a "walking only course" so I think they would be shocked to read your comment. There are a few uphill walks like #4, #7, #8 and #12 but they are not bad.

Also, someone mentioned PGA West which, in my opinion, is easily walkable.

I have played Tobiano, written up here a few months ago, in a cart. With the constant up and down of the gullies or ravines, it is in my opinion, unwalkable. From the pics I have seen of Cape Kidnappers, it seems to be  more like Kidnappers than any other course I have noticed and the similarity I am referring to is the gullies and ravines, not the rest of the architecture. It was very interesting to see what Tom mentioned, ie the bridges. I think Tobiano could use some bridges to make it walkable and that would definitely change my opinion of the course.

Otherwise, in the northwest, Furry Creek (Sean Leary's favourite), Chateau Whistler (RTJII) and a few of the courses in the Rockies are definitely unwalkable.

I haven't played it for a few years but Longaberger would probably be up there.

In general, I think the problem with "unwalkable" courses isn't the holes themselves but the distances between greens and tees.

I played Black Mesa and Paa-Ko Ridge this afternoon.  I walked Black Mesa and it wasn't too bad.  On the other hand I wouldn't have even thought about walking Paa-Ko.

Zowie, I can't believe I forgot to mention Lederach.  I think it is walkable, but I wouldn't dream of doing so.  Even so, Lederach is a very good course on the same level as Tobacco Road - maybe better.  Get out there and see it!

The 5 best courses I have played that would be nearly impossible to walk would be Bryan Park (Champions), PGA (Dye), Bear's Best Atlanta, Thanksgiving Point, and TPC Wakefield Plantation.

--So, overall, my list should prove 2 things, I have played a limited number of great courses, the ones I have played have been easily walkable, and that most likely, few truly great courses are not walkable, unless you could very hilly terrain.

JKM,

I should have shown you South Mountain when you were here in SLC.  Walking that course makes TP look like a walk in the park...Its 6 miles of up and down and up and down again.  But the fun found on the course is every bit as good as TP if not better.

I still have an open invite for anyone to try South Mountain.  If you can do it, I'll re-imburse your green fees and give you a $100 to boot.  It really is a fun course to play and has some good holes, but certainly the most unwalkable course I've ever played.

I'll take that bet. Lets try for Thursday October 9.

JKM,

Sounds good.  I'll mark it on my calendar.  Of course you must carry your bag too.  I'll be riding along side of you in the cart and I'll be sure to bring along the defibulator.....

Can't wait to see your face after your dog-tired to the bone and then see the walk between 16 and 17  :)

Black Mesa and Paa Ko were tough walks but nowhere near impossible.

To me, very hilly isn't nearly the impediment to walking that loooooooooooong green to tee walks are (sometimes Mattspeak works so well).

George,

Come play South Mountain.  You can have long uphill walks from green to tee instead of just plain ordinary long walks..   ;D

First off Wolf Creek in Mesquite, NV doesn't allow walking so by strict definition of this particular thread it doesn't apply as a layout that allows walking at least some of the time.

I do agree w Phil Y about BB. The Black is a massive scale property and those who are not prepared to handle its rigors -- that includes more than the shotmaking dimension will be hard pressed to keep from getting short breaths as they head up the 15th hole on the grand conclusion stretch of holes.

As tough as BB can be -- the ultimate test would be to handle the walking associated with The Bridge on Long Island. Before they allowed carts I could not see how members -- prospective ones too -- would even begin to handle the chore in taking on the property there.

In regards to Dismal River I don't know if walking is permitted -- if so then you can add that one to the mix as well.

You could conceivably walk during your round at Dismal, but one would most certainly take a cart to cover the 1.5 miles between the parking lot/main clubhouse and the 1st tee (not unlike Sand Hills, though DR's cart trek is farther and steeper).

I know it has already been mentioned, but Stone Eagle is a really tough one to walk.  The toughest that I have actually walked would have to be Erin Hills.  Both the starter and the pro told me that the walk from the first tee until completion was over 8 miles.

For those that have seen Erin Hills, they know what I mean.  Not only is it crazy long from the back tees, but having to walk up and down those glacial mounds all day takes a taxing toll on the body.

Sanctuary is an impossible walk. Next door neighbor Castle Pines GC is a walk in the park by comparison. I don't think it's "impossible/really hard" to walk. The pros survived 4 days walking there, though it was tough for the caddies with those huge Tour bags.  Kapalua Plantation would be really hard. Same with Lakota Canyon.

I walked Black Mesa and Paa-Ko Ridge during the GCA event--neither was that bad a walk though Paa-Ko is tougher.
